"The principal natural resources of Pepperland were - and still are - sun... music... laughter... and love."

The jury is still out on whether or not the Beatles can turn our youth into communists (see last week's post for more info on that), but their visuals are definitely psychedelic in their 1968 book "Yellow Submarine". This tightly bound paperback has 128 full color illustrated pages, and was made to accompany the 1968 animated musical film of the same name. Despite being about the Beatles, the band members themselves had limited participation in the film (and presumably, the graphic novel).

If you or someone you love became a communist after listening to "Abbey Road", you too may be entitled to financial compensation. 🐞🎸

According to this newly catalogued pamphlet, the Beatles' "four mop-headed anti-Christ beatniks" were destroying the emotional and mental stability of the United States by appealing to our youth. The 15 page pamphlet, published in Oklahoma in 1965 by the Christian Crusade, details the ways that excitable music and its hypnotic nature is a force for communism.

For the safety of our archival materials, we don't allow users to bring food into the Reading Room. 🙅‍♀️ However, on extremely rare occasions, food still somehow finds a way into the room. This week, a user came across a 50 year old unopened tin of salmon in the Robert and Miriam Lovett Robinson Crusoe collection. 🐟️ This small manuscript (and salmon?) collection arrived at Rose Library in 2008 along with 699 editions of Daniel Defoe’s 1719 novel, “Robinson Crusoe.” The jury is still out on whether or not we want to remove the actual salmon (but not the box) from the collection, and some staff are even angling to open it to see how its held up. 🤧

Come on out to the lobby of Woodruff Library on Thursday, June 11th between 10:30am and 12:30pm for Rose Library's annual Pride Month Button Making! 🌈 You can choose from pre-printed flags or other designs to bring home as a wearable pin or magnet. Milena Williamson is a poet from Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. She has an MA and PhD in poetry, both from the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s University Belfast. Williamson is a recipient of Rose Library's Poetry and Literature travel award, which supports in-person research at Rose.
