A few minutes of preparation can make a life-saving difference.

October 9 marks Fire Prevention Day during Fire Prevention Week. The observance honors the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and reminds us that fire safety starts with awareness and preparation.

📜 Why October 9?
🔥 The Great Chicago Fire: The fire began on October 8, 1871, burned for two days, and because it was the day the fire inflicted its heaviest and most devastating damage on October 9.

📅 A Day of Remembrance: October 9 became Fire Prevention Day, turning a historic tragedy into a call for education and preparedness.

🏘️ The Impact: Hundreds of lives were lost, more than 100,000 people were left without homes, and over 17,000 structures were destroyed.

🧯 From Remembrance to Prevention
In 1911, fire marshals promoted Fire Prevention Day to help communities learn from the past.

In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance.

Today, the message continues throughout October: test smoke alarms, make an escape plan, and talk with your family about fire safety. ✅🏠
