Captain Tom Hathorne recently spent several days in Texas training at TEEX Disaster City with Utah Task Force 1 (UT-TF1). For the past eight years, Captain Hathorne has proudly served as a member of UT-TF1, deploying across the country to assist communities in their greatest times of need.

Trainings at Disaster City are designed to replicate large scale, real world disaster scenarios. The UT-TF1 squad included firefighters from Draper, South Jordan, West Valley, Unified, Park City and Ogden. Over four intense days, Captain Hathorne and his squad participated in advanced, hands-on training including high-angle technical rescues, structural shoring, search and extraction operations, and coordinated canine search efforts.

DCFD is proud of Captain Hathorne and the Utah Task Force One squad for their continued commitment to sharpening their skills and serving wherever disaster strikes.

A group of local 5th grade students spent the afternoon at Draper City Fire Department interviewing our Fuels Crew supervisor, Parker Hansen.

The students learned about wildland fire deployments, the mitigation work being done right here in Draper City, Parker’s story about being attached by fire beetles and the specialized tools and trucks that help keep our firefighters safe during wildland season.

Today the Draper City Fire Department invited the community to participate in a push-in ceremony — a firehouse tradition that dates back to the 1800s. Symbolic of the teamwork of the station and the pride they take in their work, this was Draper’s first official push-in ceremony.

This occasion commemorated Station 23’s new type 1-3 engine. This engine is built for structure protection in a wildland/urban area like SunCrest, has all the safety features of all modern apparatus, and is expected to serve the City for the next decade.

Fire Chief Clint Smith, City Manager Mike Barker, and Mayor Troy Walker all spoke at the event. Deacon Mike Mort of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church blessed the engine and fire crew. Following that, the engine was cleaned and pushed into the bay by the community.

Thank you to everyone who turned out and supported Station 23 and our Draper City Fire Department today!

Controlled Burn

Draper City Fire Department’s wildland crews, along with state wildland crews, will conduct controlled burns in the Hog Hollow area of SunCrest today, Monday, November 17, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The public should be aware that smoke and flames may be visible during this timeframe, and do not need to report to 9-1-1.

Controlled burns are dependent on weather conditions and are subject to change. This activity is a wildfire prevention measure and is closely monitored by personnel on site.
