Ever heard of a Chimney Swift? 🐦

These fascinating birds spend most of their lives in flight and rely on chimneys and other vertical structures for nesting and roosting.

Keep an eye on the skies—you may spot them swooping overhead as they prepare for their fall migration! 🍂

Learn more about these unique feathered visitors in the post below. 👇

The bird chittering over your roof all summer may never have touched the ground in its life. It can't.

A chimney swift's feet aren't built for perching — they only cling. So it does nearly everything on the wing: catching insects, drinking, even bathing by skimming the surface of a pond mid-flight. It lands only to roost and to nest, clinging upright to a vertical wall.

☁️ That wall used to be a hollow tree. Now it's far more often your chimney — and the bird treats the brick flue exactly like the inside of a dead trunk.

It builds a half-cup nest of twigs and glues the whole thing to the wall with its own saliva. Spine-tipped tail feathers prop it against the brick like a third foot. And it spends the daylight hours overhead, working through the mosquitoes, gnats, and flying ants lifting off your yard by the thousand.

🐦 The best show comes in fall. As they stage for the long flight to the Amazon, hundreds or thousands spiral down into a single chimney at dusk — a slow tornado of birds pouring into a hole in a roof.

They're loud for a few weeks and gone by frost, leaving behind nothing but a quieter mosquito season. The one thing that helps them: a chimney left uncapped through the summer, swept in early spring before they arrive.

🌱 Native Plant Spotlight: Smooth Hydrangea 🤍

September's spotlight is Smooth Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens), a beautiful native shrub that brings long-lasting blooms and supports pollinators well into the growing season.

Its large, cloud-like clusters of white flowers brighten gardens from early to late summer and often remain attractive into fall. The blooms provide nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, while the shrub's dense branching offers shelter for birds and wildlife.

Smooth Hydrangea thrives in partial shade to full sun (with adequate moisture) and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It's an excellent choice for woodland gardens, foundation plantings, rain gardens, and naturalized landscapes. Once established, it is a hardy, low-maintenance shrub that returns year after year.

A graceful native alternative to many non-native hydrangea varieties, Smooth Hydrangea adds beauty, supports wildlife, and provides four-season interest with its blooms, foliage, and textured stems.

🌿 Plant native. Support pollinators!
