The District 7430 Rotary Exchange year is ending this month, so a tearful farewell followed a delicious lunch and pool party. Some of these students made life-long friends and have an American family, to boot! That’s the Rotary Way.

A big shoutout to Max Rose, who has run the exchange program for our club for 40 years! Thanks a million, Max!

Former Freeman’s Auction House VP and a favorite past club president, Amy Parenti, presented a mini Antique Road Show, complete with prizes. Exhibiting offerings that sold from $50 to $3,500,000, she challenged us to guess the selling prices and we were (collectively) surprisingly good at it. Perhaps we spend too much time binging PBS?

As a thank you to our speakers, we usually gift them an anniversary Mercer tile. But as a long time clubmember, she rated something special: a new set of wheels! (BTW, no club money was used for this).

Thank you for a fun-filled evening, Amy :)

We come for the hairnets! Some just know how to wear them….Joe Blei brought his kiddos, but missed the photo shoot. Thanks, club members for helping to pack enough food to feed 202 children every day for a year. What a difference 250 people can make in less than 2 hours at the Feed my Starving Children meal packing event. We’ll sign up again next year!

Two Rotary exchange students carried our banner into the longest running Memorial Day parade in the nation! They were thrilled to lead 10 cars carrying veterans from past wars, some who were not able to walk the parade route. One car carried a veteran from World War II, who is currently 99 1/2 years old. Thanks to Fred Beans for loaning us the cars and thank you to members of our club for driving them.

The hills were alive with the sound of music last night, as Oscar Hammerstein Museum board member, Julie Flack, got our Rotary club to sing several songs during her presentation! She told us the history of Oscar Hammerstein’s family and how Oscar became a Broadway musical success story, despite repeated advice from his family to never go into the music business. She told us about the circular connection between Oscar Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Sondheim and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Lin-Manuel Miranda and the Oscar Hammerstein museum! Julie encourages all of us to visit Highland Farm to learn more about this famous musician and his wonderful musicals. Highland Farm is one more star attraction in our beautiful little town.

Thank you, Julie Flack, for a fabulous presentation and a fun filled evening. If your club would like a wonderful speaker, contact [email protected]

Classifications speeches are an old timey Rotary tradition that are essentially oral autobiographies introducing club members to a new member.

Last week, Alan Braverman told us about growing up in a homogeneous area of NE Philly and about how he met the love of his life at summer camp, while also meeting lots of diverse new friends. He went on to get a doctorate in pharmacology and has become an expert in pharmacovigilance. He works with medical staff in hospitals to make sure patients are getting the right prescriptions and that there are no negative interactions.

Chuck Etter also met and is still married to the love of his life. He told us about how much he enjoys working with teenagers, and that his life took a turn for the better when he left a sales job and went into teaching high school. While teaching, he helped start an Interact club in the Wissahickon school district. He retired several years ago, but is still helping teenagers through the Four Way Speech contest.

We are thrilled to have both these gentlemen as club members and look forward to spending much more time with them!

Speaking of Interact, facilitator and member, Lori Roche, brought the current Interact president, Sofiya, and our Four Way Test speech contest winner, Alexis, to tell us what their club has been doing these last six months. Their Friday donut sales this year yielded $800. Here is a photo with their big check! Our club happily added enough to it so they could donate $1000 to Shelter Box this year. Thank you for your service above self, Interactors!
