The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will be conducting an aerial black fly suppression operation on Friday June 5, 2026 at 7:00 AM and will occur in the Neshaminy Creek, Schuylkill River, and Lehigh River across Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, Berks, Schuylkill, Lehigh, and Northampton Counties. Operations will begin near Wings Field in Montgomery County and finish in Northampton County.
The helicopter used for these operations will be a Bell Jet Ranger OH58+ with tail number N655HA and is grey with blue and red stripes.
๐ Treatment operations will specifically take place within the following section of the waterways:
โข Neshaminy Creek: From Playwicki Park, Langhorne upstream to the Rt 611 Bridge in Doylestown.
โข Schuylkill River: From the City Avenue bridge in Philadelphia upstream to the Kernsville Lake Dam in Schuylkill County.
โข Lehigh River: Between Easton & the Hamilton St Bridge in Allentown
๐ Helicopter Applicators Inc. will be dispersing Vectobac 12AS, a Bti product manufactured by Valent BioSciences. Bti is short for Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis, which is a bacterial larvicide, not a chemical, and is the only product used in Pennsylvania's waterways for black fly suppression. Vectobac 12AS is a brown liquid with a fish oil odor and is not toxic to fish or other aquatic organisms.
During treatment, the helicopter will fly low near tree top level and will release the Vectobac at predetermined positions on the river.
Please note that this operation is limited strictly to the waterways listed above and does NOT involve aerial spraying over the county.
