Shots Fired at Downey police officer

Downey, CA - October 13, 2026: On October 13, 2026, at approximately 8:30 a.m., an officer was on a call for service in the 10500 block of Downey Avenue. While the officer was sitting in his police vehicle, a Dodge Durango drove by the officer and the driver of the vehicle shot at the officer. The officer’s vehicle was struck multiple times; however, the officer was not hit.

The officer drove after the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The adult male driver was taken into custody and two fi****ms were recovered at the scene.

This appears to be an isolated incident, and the investigation is ongoing.

Pink Patch Project

Join us at Lazy Dog Restaurants in Downey on Thursday, October 15, from 5-9pm where our officers will be “Serving for a Cure” in partnership with the Pink Patch Project

For the month of October, the Downey Police Department will be wearing and selling our pink patches in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

We will be selling our merchandise during this event.

All proceeds from the sales of these items will be donated to a cancer research organization. You can also purchase items at our Records window Monday-Friday 7:30am - 5:30pm and Saturday and Sundays 2:30pm - 5:00pm.

The Downey Police Department, in partnership with the Downey Unified School District, is happy to announce the continuation of the Downey Police Department’s Holiday Greeting Card Contest. Our local students are encouraged to submit their creative designs for this year’s holiday greeting cards. Four winners will be selected and their artwork will be featured on a Downey Police Department holiday greeting card. Winners will be recognized and receive a $50 gift card. We look forward to seeing the artwork of our amazing Downey students!

CONTEST GUIDELINES:
1. The contest is open to all Downey Unified School District students and Downey private school students. One winner will be selected from each of the following grade categories:
TK-2,
3-5,
6-8,
9-12
2. Artwork must be on 11” x 8.5” paper (landscape format) and properly and legibly labeled on the back with the student’s name, grade and school.
3. Artwork submissions are due Friday, November 13, 2026.
4. DUSD students may submit their artwork to their school’s office, the District office, or the Downey Police Department, 10911 Brookshire Avenue, attention Yvonne Rosales. Private school students must submit their artwork directly to the Downey Police Department, attention Yvonne Rosales.

Winners will be notified the week of November 16, 2026.

In the early morning hours, your Watch One unit noticed a car driving in circles around the area. Looked lost. Officers stopped it for a traffic violation and found a loaded, unregistered G***k 43X under the driver’s seat. The passenger had his own loaded gun on him too.

Both subjects were arrested and a tour of our jail was provided to them so they won’t get lost next time. Great work Watch One!

The Downey Police Department, in
partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s
Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and
California Highway Patrol, has been investigating an
organized theft crew responsible for a series of
high-value vehicle thefts throughout Los Angeles and
Orange Counties.

The crime series began on or about August 7, 2026,
and continued through September 22, 2026. Over the
course of the investigation, the crew was linked to
numerous stolen high-end vehicles, multiple police
pursuits, a carjacking in the City of Downey, and an
incident in which a suspect pointed a handgun at a
police officer during a traffic stop.

As a result of the investigation, Downey Police SWAT,
along with SWAT teams from the Los Angeles County
Sheriff’s Department, Orange County Sheriff’s
Department, South Gate Police Department, El Monte
Police Department, Torrance Police Department,
Redondo Beach Police Department, Beverly Hills
Police Department, Manhattan Beach Police
Department, Gardena Police Department, and
California Highway Patrol, simultaneously executed
search warrants at 11 locations associated with the
suspects and their criminal activity.

During the operation, six suspects were taken into
custody. Investigators also recovered nine stolen
vehicles and more than a dozen fi****ms. Following
this lengthy investigation, the Los Angeles County
District Attorney’s Office filed multiple felony counts
against four suspects.

This investigation highlights the importance of
collaboration between law enforcement agencies when
combating organized criminal activity that crosses
jurisdictional boundaries. The Downey Police
Department would like to recognize our detectives,
assisting personnel, and law enforcement partners for
their teamwork, professionalism, and commitment to
keeping our communities safe.
