12 of DeKalb County Fire Department’s vehicle rescue technicians spent their weekend in the 16-hour Basic Vehicle Extrication class this weekend.

This class was instructed by the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Training Academy and hosted at the DeKalb County Fire Department to comply with our certification and re-certification standards for vehicle rescue technicians.

We want to give a shoutout to Gill Automotive for providing us the vehicles to train with!

Why did you join the DCFD?

“Being born and raised in DeKalb County, I wanted to give back by serving the people who make this community such a great place to live.”

What’s your proudest moment so far?

“My proudest moment was responding to a call where we were able to save a house from burning down. After the fire was out, the homeowners came over and thanked us. Knowing they could stay in their home that night and seeing their gratitude made all the training and hard work worthwhile.”

What’s your favorite thing about being at the station?

“The camaraderie and dedication shown around the station. Regardless of what everyone has going on in their personal lives or at work, everyone comes in ready to train, improve, and be prepared to serve the community.”

What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering who isn’t sure they have the time?

“Being a volunteer means you don’t have to be available at all times. What matters is showing up when you can and giving it your all when you’re here. If you have a desire to serve and can help when you’re able, the fire department is a rewarding way to make a difference.”

This afternoon was absolutely perfect for our Rural Water Supply training at Indian Creek Youth Camp!

DeKalb County firefighters, along with some Alexandria firefighters, had a fantastic training on hydrant fill site and static water source fill site operations. We were able to consistently hit our target for tanker fill rates at 1,000 gallons per minute.

Unlike municipalities, rural fire departments rarely have fire hydrants available to supply water. We have been working and training really hard to overcome this challenge by improving our equipment, strategies, and tactics for rural water supply.

We want to extend a special thanks to Ben Copley and the staff at Indian Creek Youth Camp for allowing us to use their facility for this training. We also appreciate our volunteer firefighters who sacrificed their Sunday afternoon to make our department better prepared to protect our communities.

DeKalb County Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial structure fire on Sparta Highway at Center Hill Sports Marine Friday evening at 6:04 p.m.

DeKalb 911 received multiple reports from passing motorists of heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the business. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire throughout the building with threatened exposures to other nearby building that contained new vessel inventory. Fire crews successfully contained the blaze and protected the exposures that included several new pontoon boats. Firefighters remained on the scene for nearly 6 hours performing firefighting and salvage and overhaul operations.

The main building and shop located in the rear, including all contents, were complete losses. A pickup truck parked outside at the rear of the business was also a complete loss. The business was closed at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.

While the final determination of origin of the fire is still pending, the preliminary finding is that the fire started from a pickup truck parked outside at the rear of the building.

DeKalb County Fire Department’s Johnson’s Chapel, Midway, Four Seasons, Cookeville Highway, Main stations, and county-wide personnel responded to the scene, along with mutual aid assistance from White County’s Cassville and Central View fire departments.

Other agencies assisting on the scene were DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, DeKalb County Emergency Medical Services, DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency, Caney Fork Electric Cooperative, and Middle Tennessee Natural Gas.
