Recently, Instructor Harold Mack, Lieutenant Latanya Smith, and several Probation and Parole Officers spoke with students in the Appoquinimink School District about careers in corrections and community supervision. The team attended the Louis L Redding Middle School “Soaring Into Success” Career Fair before presenting to students in the Middletown High School Criminal Justice Program.

Probation Officers discussed the important role they play in public safety and rehabilitation, while also highlighting several specialized units within Delaware Probation and Parole, including Electronic Monitoring. Instructor Mack and Lt. Smith also spoke about careers as Correctional Officers and the critical role correctional staff play in protecting our communities while promoting successful reentry for those in our custody.

It was a great opportunity to engage with students, answer questions, and introduce them to future career opportunities within the Delaware Department of Correction.

Shoutout to Instructor Harold Mack, Lt. Latanya Smith, and Probation Officers Kaitlyn Maurer, Shahida Santiago-Lewis, Matthew Lemite, Andrea Hurd, Ria Wallace, Brandon Joiner, and Justin Porter.

Congratulations to the first nine work release residents who successfully completed the five-week Escape the Odds Non-CDL Box Truck Pilot Program!

Created by Aaron Smith, CEO and founder of the Escape The Odds Program, this innovative initiative is designed to support successful reentry by focusing on entrepreneurship, workforce readiness, and soft skills development. Through his lived experience as a formerly justice-involved individual, Mr. Smith brings a unique perspective that creates meaningful engagement and connection with participants.

The program provides residents returning from incarceration with the opportunity to explore launching a non-CDL box truck business while gaining practical instruction in workplace literacy, logistics operations, and business development. Participants learned topics such as securing freight through brokers, evaluating fuel and load profitability, obtaining an Motor Carrier (MC) number, and identifying startup funding opportunities.

By combining entrepreneurship education with real-world workforce skills, this program empowers participants to build confidence, develop marketable skills, embrace personal responsibility, and pursue sustainable opportunities that support long-term economic self-sufficiency and successful community reintegration.

We are proud of these residents for their hard work and commitment to building a better future.

Delaware Probation and Parole hosted a reentry job fair last week inside Sussex Correctional Institution for 94 inmates who are nearing their release from incarceration. The event was co-sponsored by The Way Home organization in honor of the late Dolores Clark, an impactful reentry professional and a passionate advocate for second chances. Delores believed strongly in breaking down barriers, believing in people, and building pathways to opportunity - this event helps carry her important work forward.

DOC appreciates these 18 employers, training providers, and reentry support organizations who were represented on-site to offer job opportunities, training, and services to inmates who are returning the community in the coming months: First State Community Action Agency culinary and Second Chance programs, The Way Home Worcs and Launcher workforce development, Impact Life workforce development, Coras Peer Support, Food Bank of Delaware culinary and forklift training certification programs, Stanzaile Solutions, Tremaine and Sons Landscaping, Delaware Restaurant Association HOPES Program, La Red Health Center Second Chance Rural Re-entry program, Delaware Tech Financial Aid, Sussex Tech Groves School and adult trades programs, Bub’s Grubs Food Truck Business, K and D Maintenance, Great Outdoor Cottages, Dover In-Reach, Vital Core reentry services, Delaware Department of Education Prison Education, Delaware Probation and Parole reentry in-reach support

Events like this are key to helping individuals build connections to employment, education, housing resources, and community support systems that can reduce recidivism and strengthen public safety.

A special thank you to Sussex Probation and Parole Reentry Coordinator / Senior Probation Officer Kevin Cooper for organizing this outstanding program and to DOC’s growing list of partners for their continued commitment to reentry and second chances.
