Delaware’s Community Solar program, which is regulated by the Delaware Public Service Commission (PSC), provides an opportunity for Delmarva Power customers to receive credit for electricity generated by large-scale solar projects without installing panels on their own property.

While this program is not run by the DNREC State Energy Office (SEO), the agency is providing this information as a resource to Delaware residents.

For Ocean Month, we asked our colleagues here at the DNREC Division of Climate, Coastal and Energy what their must-have items are when they are heading out for a day at the beach.

Popular responses included sandwiches, books, music, a beach umbrella, a hat, sunscreen, extra clothes and a cooler filled with beverages. What are some of the things you make sure you have to make it a perfect beach day?

As the climate changes, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are expected to increase. If severe weather is in the forecast, the National Weather Service may issue a watch or warning. A severe weather watch may be issued if there is a risk of hazardous weather. A severe weather warning may be issued if severe weather is occurring, imminent or likely. If you are in a storm watch zone, plan to take protective action. When storms roll in from the ocean, they can bring increased risk of coastal flooding.

Gov. Matt Meyer has proclaimed June as Ocean Month in Delaware.

Ocean Month provides an opportunity to learn more about the importance of the ocean and why we should protect it. Did you know that the ocean covers over 70% of the Earth's surface, but that about 95% of the ocean remains unexplored?

Check out this NOAA video to learn more about the ocean. https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/news/june15/wod.mp4

DNREC’s Low- to Moderate-Income Solar Program is meant to bring renewable energy to a segment of the Delaware population that has historically been underserved by existing state programs and incentives. There are two different pathways to qualify for receiving a cost-free or reduced-cost solar installation on your home. For low-income households, applications and approvals are obtained through the Weatherization Assistance Program, which serves low-income households with cost-free weatherization. For moderate-income households, applications and approvals are obtained through the Green Energy Program, with applicants specifically requesting the reduced-cost solar installation as a moderate-income household.

The Delaware DNREC offers a free Weatherization Assistance Program to help establish comfortable, energy-saving homes. The program, run through the Division of Climate, Coastal and Energy, helps homeowners and renters cut their energy bills by weatherproofing and improving the energy efficiency of their homes. Professionals from the Weatherization Assistance Program can help low-income households fix energy-related problems by assessing the home and providing weatherstripping, insulation, energy efficient light bulbs and other energy-saving measures – all free of charge.

Additionally, the Delaware Division of the Public Advocate has is advising that there has been a company going door-to-door claiming to be a contractor of the PSC and asking for account information for Delmarva Power & Light customers in order to correct a billing error. That information is then used to switch the customer’s electricity supplier without their explicit consent. Pet owners should take some time to learn about the health risks that summer’s heat poses to their pets, including heat stress, heatstroke, paw pad burns and sunburn. Governor Matt Meyer has proclaimed May 18-22 as Heat Awareness Week in Delaware.

Always make sure that pets have access to water when outside in the heat. Pet owners should never leave their dog or cat alone in a hot car, even for a few minutes. And when taking pets for a walk, remember that the surface heat of asphalt, concrete, sand and metal can be up to 40 to 60 degrees hotter than the air -- hot enough to burn a pet’s paws within a minute.
