Here is what automation can do: Governor Matt Meyer announced that Delaware just cleared more than 64,000 eligible criminal records from public background checks in a single automated batch. The manual process cleared about 20,000 over the past year.
Under Delaware's Clean Slate Act, people with eligible low-level offenses are supposed to have their records cleared automatically, no paperwork, no fees. Automation is what makes that possible at any real scale, and the State's goal is to clear the bulk of the remaining backlog by August.
For Delawareans waiting on a second chance, faster is not just a technical improvement. It is the difference between applying for that job or apartment now versus months from now. That is the case for automation in government: not replacing careful work, but making it possible to do that work at a scale that actually matches the need.
