Strafford County in NH is made up of three cities: Dover, Rochester, and Somersworth; and ten towns: Barrington, Durham, Farmington, Lee, Madbury, Middleton, Milton, New Durham, Rollinsford, and Strafford, and is home to approximately 125,000 citizens. The County is currently responsible for: Caring for the elderly in need of nursing home care at Riverside Rest Home; operating a regional jail/hous

e of correction, together with a jail industries program, community corrections program, drug and mental health courts, and a transitional housing program; the County Attorney oversees and provides for the prosecution of criminals; operates a domestic violence unit, child advocacy center, and family justice center; the Sheriff oversee and handles the transportation of criminals, delivery of writs and other Court-related paperwork, operates a Communications and Dispatch Center, and oversees Courthouse security; the Register of Deeds is responsible for the recording of official land transfer documents at the Registry; the Treasurer, together with the Commissioners, oversee the payment of all County financial obligations; as well as a variety of other community-related programs to assist the citizens of the County.

The Dover School District is preparing to welcome students back for the 2026-2027 school year. The first day of school for all grades is Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Families can find information about opening-day schedules, transportation, registration and other preparations from Superintendent Dr. Christine Boston.

Several student orientations will take place Monday, Aug. 31, including kindergarten, fifth grade, and freshmen orientation.

đź—łPrimary Election Reminder: Ward 5 Voting Location đź—ł

The Ward 5 polling location for the September 8th State Primary Election will be the Charpentier Apartments Community Room, 28 Franklin Street. The new location was selected to provide a better voting experience for residents by offering improved parking availability, enhanced pedestrian safety, better lighting, and increased accessibility for voters with mobility impairments.

The Strafford County Sheriff’s Office is proud to congratulate Deputy Sims on successfully graduating from the 203rd New Hampshire Police Academy!

Graduation marks the completion of months of intensive training, hard work, and dedication in preparation for a career serving the people of New Hampshire.

We welcome him back to Strafford County and look forward to seeing him continue his service to our community.

Oak Street’s right‑turn lane at the Central Avenue intersection will be closed this week for utility work related to the Central Avenue water main project. Traffic will shift to the center lane with flagger assistance; delays should be expected.

Central Avenue will remain one lane, alternated by flaggers between Ham and Hough streets. A planned water shutoff will occur Tuesday night, Aug. 25, until 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
