The Dover Coalition for Youth is proud to partner with the Dover NH Police to help provide prevention services throughout the community. In addition to hosting events like Drug Take Back Day Dover PD is a consistent support of the Coalition serving as our fiscal agent, on our advisory board and always willing to assist with projects. Today as we celebrate National Police Week we thank them for their support of the Coalition and all they do for the City of Dover.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week.

Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

We remember and honor those officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

Tessa was first introduced to prescription opioids in high school after a sports injury. She was “hooked” by age 18 and used prescription opioids and other drugs to self-medicate her chronic headaches, pain from fibromyalgia, and depression. After receiving a DUI at age 21, Tessa completed substance use treatment but soon relapsed and began buying prescription opioids on the street.

By age 28, Tessa was using he**in. She continued to use prescription opioids and illicit drugs throughout all her pregnancies. Her first and second child both experienced withdrawal symptoms. At the peak of her opioid use disorder, Tessa was arrested for theft and burglary and jailed, and she lost custody of her children.

After entering treatment eight times and continuing to relapse, Tessa finally reached a point where she was ready to make a change. Tessa has been in recovery for three years and runs a treatment center focused on supporting pregnant women with substance use disorders. Tessa feels that sharing her story is furthering her dream to help women with similar backgrounds realize that recovery is possible.

Tele began misusing prescription opioids with friends in high school, seeking a “numbing effect” from the drugs. He quickly became addicted. Throughout high school, Tele was popular, played sports, and got good grades, but he experienced anxiety and depression that were heightened by his inability to share his sexual identity. Tele began using he**in during his senior year. After a car crash, he was arrested and jailed for driving while impaired and for possession of illegal substances.

Tele sought treatment for his substance use disorder and has been in recovery for four years. He credits his parents and friends for helping him through the difficult treatment and recovery process. In recovery, he enjoys feeling happy and clear-headed. Tele hopes that by sharing his story, he can reduce the stigma associated with opioid use disorder by showing others that there are many faces and voices associated with addiction and recovery.

Stevi Rae has been in recovery for two and a half years and credits going through treatment with other Alaska Natives as key to her recovery journey. Raised in Naknek, Alaska, Stevi Rae grew up commercial and subsistence fishing. She was first introduced to prescription opioids after she survived a car crash and doctors prescribed her opioids to manage her pain. She says that she quickly became addicted and persuaded her doctors to prescribe her extra medication to last several months since she would be unable to return for follow-up visits. Stevi Rae soon began buying prescription opioids illegally and eventually started using he**in and methamphetamines.

A year later, she felt like she would do anything to get opioids and couldn’t stop. She sought treatment in Dillingham, Alaska because there were no options in Naknek. In treatment, she shared her story of trauma and childhood sexual abuse that fueled her need for drugs and alcohol. Stevi Rae found that telling her story—and being surrounded by other Alaska Natives—helped her and others heal. Currently, there are no recovery resources available in Naknek, so Stevi Rae is creating her own. She believes that if she can stay in recovery, anyone can.
