In Loving Memory of Siri
“Cool Skipper”
2001–2026
Today, our hearts are incredibly heavy as we say goodbye to our beautiful Siri.
Siri, registered as Cool Skipper, was born in 2001 and came to Lucky Orphans in 2015 with her daughter, Tula. From the moment she became part of our family, Siri showed us that a disability does not define a life.
Nearly completely blind because of a genetic condition, Siri learned to navigate her world in ways that continually amazed us. She relied on sound, smell, memory, routine, and—perhaps most importantly—the horses around her. After being introduced to our miniature herd, Siri learned every inch of her surroundings and lived with confidence and independence. She ran. She played. She knew where she belonged.
And she was never truly alone.
For years, her dear friend Dottie became her “seeing-eye buddy,” rarely leaving her side. Their relationship was one of those quiet, extraordinary examples of how deeply horses care for one another.
Siri was also a mother. Her daughter, Tula, was born on St. Patrick’s Day, and Siri's strength as a mother became part of their story long before they ever came to Lucky Orphans. When Tula survived a mountain lion attack as a foal, it was Siri who protected her.
That was Siri.
Strong. Protective. Adaptable. Confident. And far more capable than anyone might have assumed simply by looking at what she could not see.
Recently, Siri developed a serious medical issue that was not healing as it should. Further testing revealed squamous cell carcinoma. Today, after careful veterinary evaluation and with her comfort and dignity at the center of the decision, we helped Siri peacefully leave this world.
There are losses at a sanctuary that are especially difficult to put into words. These horses aren't passing through our lives. They become part of the rhythm of every day—the feedings, the turnout, the familiar sounds from a stall or paddock, the personalities we instinctively look for when we walk onto the farm.
Siri had been part of that rhythm for more than a decade.
For eleven years, Lucky Orphans had the privilege of giving Siri a place where being blind never meant being less. She had safety, friendship, family, excellent care, and the freedom to simply be a horse.
And in return, Siri gave us something even greater.
She reminded us that there is an enormous difference between having limitations and living a limited life.
Siri's life was anything but limited.
Run freely now, sweet girl. No fences to memorize. No darkness to navigate.
We hope somehow, wherever you are, you can see just how deeply you were loved.
