Before you head out for International Picnic Day, remember that summer temperatures can turn a great meal into a food safety risk. Keep cold foods cold, hot foods hot, and don't leave perishable foods sitting out for more than two hours (or one hour if it's above 90Β°F).

Browntail Moth Update πŸ›

Browntail Moth Update πŸ›

The latest browntail moth monitoring update from the Maine Forest Service and Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry shows that caterpillars are now large enough to leave their webs and begin wandering in search of food or to escape predators and disease.

Researchers are also observing signs of naturally occurring viral and fungal pathogens affecting browntail populations at several monitoring sites, a hopeful sign as the season progresses.

If you find browntail caterpillars on your home, vehicle, or outdoor structures:

βœ”οΈ Use a strong stream of water to knock them off
βœ”οΈ Use a wet/dry vacuum with soapy water and a HEPA filter
βœ”οΈ Keep windows closed to prevent caterpillars and hairs from entering your home

Please help us thank and tag the Maine Forest Service and Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry for their continued monitoring and public updates.
