On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to our founder Elbridge Augustus Thompson. In his day, "Decoration Day" was a day to celebrate all departed veterans, not just those who had died in service. Since his death in 1911, the library has continued to placed flowers on his grave and honored his service, even as the meaning of the holiday has changed.

Before founding the library in 1898 in honor of his wife Lucia Eddy, Dr. Thompson was a surgeon for nearly three years during the Civil War. His unit fought from Louisiana to Vicksburg and the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia by the end of the war, and he treated hundreds, if not thousands, of wounded soldiers.

After the war, he returned to Dover to set up his medical practice. Dr. Thompson was a proud Civil War veteran, leading the local GAR until his death.

If you're interested in learning more about Dr. Thompson and the history of the library, stop in and pick up a free booklet!

Remember to honor those who served today, it's about more than cookouts.

Have a wonderful rest of the weekend and we'll see you back at the library on Wednesday!
