Did you know that the Wyoming Pioneer Memorial Museum in collaboration with the Wyoming Pioneer Association has been hosting a 4th grade essay competition since 1995? Converse County 4th grade classes tour the Wyoming Pioneer Museum to find an artifact to write an essay about that is fictional or factual. The top three essays from Douglas and the top three from Glenrock win cash prizes and are invited to Pioneer Day (Thursday) at the Wyoming State Fair in August to read their essay in the 1885 one room Prairie Valley Schoolhouse (white) that is behind the Wyoming Pioneer Museum. The prize money comes from Wyoming Pioneer Association members who donated the money in memory of a family member. The Bolln family graciously donated the prize money from 1995 until a few years ago in memory of Beef Bolln. Now the prize money comes from the Elaine Crummer memorial and the Crummer family. This year we had nine 4th grade classes (6 from Douglas, 3 from Glenrock) participate. Essays arrive to the judges by mid-March. Winners are announced in May and gifted their prize pack at their end of year school assembly. The essays of the winners have been kept in the library at the Wyoming Pioneer Museum since 1995. If you won or know someone who has won, you can still read those essays at the museum. Just ask a staff member and they can show where you can find the essays.
