The Douglas Fire Department was honored to host a rest stop this morning for the First Responder Ride for Resilience, a 343-mile bicycle ride from Boston to New York City recognizing the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, while raising awareness and support for first responders affected by occupational cancer and mental health challenges.

The five-day ride brings together firefighters, first responders, and community members from across the country and internationally.

Among the riders were firefighters from Ireland, who presented the on-duty crew with a commemorative plaque expressing their appreciation for the department’s support. The plaque features a traditional Irish blessing and commemorates the 2026 Boston to New York City Bike Ride. We greatly appreciated this warm gesture and wish all of the riders well on their ride to NYC!

Town staff member Patrice Rousseau of the Douglas Adult Social Center also joined Paulie’s Push yesterday to honor and remember. A fun fact about Patrice: she served as an EMT with our department for many years during the 9/11 era.

Town staff member Bob Minarik from Economic Development and his wife, Deb, accompanied Paulie this morning from the Douglas Fire Department for the 6.5-mile trek into Connecticut.

For those who didn’t know, Bob shares a special connection with Paulie as a retired commercial airline pilot.

From 2021 to 2024, retired United Airlines flight attendant Paul “Paulie” Veneto pushed an airline beverage cart along routes that simulated the flight paths of the four aircraft hijacked on September 11, 2001.

Paulie last visited us in Douglas in 2024 and returned to town this year to honor the lives lost on 9/11, 25 years ago. This year, it became a true community effort, with several Douglas residents and Chief Manning joining Paulie in pushing the beverage carts.

It was an amazing experience—an opportunity to reminisce about how our country came together in the aftermath of that tragic day, and perhaps reflect on a time when life seemed a little simpler and our sense of community a little stronger. Paulie's Push
