Sharing Knowledge and Growing Understanding

Winston County Extension was proud to partner with the Winston County Soil & Water Conservation District to bring Farmer for a Day to life—a hands‑on agricultural awareness program designed to help families better understand where their food comes from and what a day in the life of a farmer really looks like.

Created for children and adults, Farmer for a Day bridges the gap for those with limited exposure to agriculture by offering fun, interactive activities that make farming understandable, engaging, and memorable. From the first event, participants were excited to learn, and many adults shared how eye‑opening it was to see the work that goes into producing everyday food.

This program reflects a shared effort, with support from Extension, Soil & Water, and local community members whose craftsmanship and generosity helped make the event possible. While each event takes a strong volunteer effort, partnerships like this make it possible to reach more families and strengthen agricultural education across Winston County.

Interested in bringing Farmer for a Day to your school or community event? Contact the Winston County Extension Office at 205‑489‑5376 to learn more or submit a request.

Inspiring the Future Through Hands‑On Learning

Winston County Alabama 4-H proudly partnered with Dr. Harmony Glenn, DVM of the Double Springs Veterinary Clinic to offer a one‑of‑a‑kind Veterinary Summer Camp for youth ages 11–18. Held over two Saturdays in summer 2025, the camp welcomed small groups of participants for an engaging, hands‑on look into the world of veterinary medicine.

Campers explored real‑world veterinary skills using realistic models, including learning about animal reproduction through a calving simulator, practicing ear tagging and intubation techniques, and gaining a better understanding of what it takes to pursue a career in animal health. Older participants also took a deeper dive into veterinary school pathways, program requirements, financial considerations like student debt, and a variety of career opportunities within the field.

This camp was made possible through strong collaboration between Extension professionals, Dr. Glenn and her clinic team, and local community partners—all working together to create an experience that was educational, honest, and inspiring. More than just a camp, it opened doors for young people to ask questions, build skills, and begin envisioning their future in animal health.

Partnerships like this show the power of Alabama Extension and Alabama 4‑H—bringing community expertise together to invest in youth, build workforce readiness, and strengthen our local communities. Be on the look out for this years Vet Camp dates coming soon!

Interested in opportunities like this for your child? Join 4‑H or learn more about upcoming youth programs by contacting the Winston County Extension Office at 205‑489‑5376. We’d love to help you get involved!
