This comment really stayed with me.

To hear that people who once planned to return home to Dothan are reconsidering because of concerns about our community, including public education, should concern all of us.

And I want to be clear, this is not someone simply expressing concerns on social media without action. I personally know of the STEAM camps Mrs. Vickers has brought to Dothan for our youth for years. She has invested her time, resources, and talents into giving back to this community. She is not just talking about the work. She has been doing the work.

I have said repeatedly that the success of Dothan City Schools is directly connected to the success of our city. You may feel this does not affect you because your children or grandchildren are not in DCS, but public education impacts all of us. A well educated community strengthens our workforce, attracts families and businesses, creates greater economic opportunity, and can help reduce poverty and crime. We all benefit when our children succeed, and we all feel the consequences when they do not.

We also have to be willing to acknowledge the challenges before us. Too much valuable board time and attention has been consumed by political agendas, power dynamics, and governance issues when our greatest urgency should be improving academic outcomes for our children.

We hired a superintendent to lead this district. While the Board absolutely has a responsibility to ask questions, provide oversight, and be fiscally responsible, we also have a responsibility to give our superintendent a fair opportunity to lead, provide him with the necessary resources to do the work, and give him our full support in implementing the academic recommendations he and his team believe our students need.

Oversight should never become obstruction, and political or power struggles should never overshadow the work we were elected to do.

That is why community engagement matters. Attend a board meeting. Ask questions. Volunteer. Mentor. Partner with a school. Support our educators. Speak up and hold all of us accountable.

We may not agree on every issue or solution, but surely we can agree that our children deserve a Board and a community focused on their success.

The success of our children is the success of our city. ❤️

It was a family affair at the Dothan High School Homecoming game last night! ❤️🐺

Our little Wolf Pup was SO excited to hit the field and cheer with the Dothan Wolves Mini Cheer Squad! 📣❤️

A special thank you to Dothan Wolves Cheer for making the night so memorable for our kiddos and giving them the opportunity to be part of the Homecoming festivities. They had an absolute blast!

There’s nothing like seeing our students, families, and community come together to celebrate our Wolf Pack! ❤️🐺

ACADEMICS MUST BE THE PRIORITY. 📚

At tonight’s board meeting, I brought the focus back to student achievement.

Three years of ACAP data show last year’s levels were:
📖 50.9% ELA proficiency
➗ 22.6% Math proficiency
⚠️ 77.4% of tested students are below proficient in math

Our own presentation said we must “treat mathematics as the district’s most urgent instructional priority.”

And let me be clear: this is not a criticism of our educators. They are doing the work every day. It is our responsibility as a Board to ensure they have the resources and support they need to help our students succeed.

My question moving forward is simple:

Does this move our students closer to proficiency?

I really enjoyed attending the Alabama Association of School Boards District 3 Meeting last week! One of the things I appreciate most about these opportunities is connecting with other school board members, especially those right here in our area, and hearing different perspectives on the issues we’re all navigating in public education.

It was also great to hear from AASB’s new Executive Director, Dr. Chad Holden, about some of the challenges and opportunities ahead for education in Alabama, as well as from our District 3 Director, Tara McCord Singley.

Always grateful for opportunities to learn, connect, and bring those perspectives back home as we continue working on behalf of our students! ❤️📚

I encourage everyone to come out to tomorrow’s Dothan City Schools Board meeting. There is a motion to censure my fellow board member, Mrs. Brenda Guilford.

If you’ve heard anything about my short tenure on this Board, you know I am a strong advocate for our children and our educators. But I am equally committed to standing against injustice toward anyone, especially when I believe someone is not being treated fairly or afforded a fair process.

I definitely have something to say tomorrow. And as I’ve said before on this Board, I will not be silenced.
