Join Dothan City Schools this summer for free books, free meals, interactive activities, and opportunities to connect with school leaders right in the community. ☀️📚

Check out the full schedule below and come see us!

Dothan City Schools is bringing reading, learning, and summer fun directly into the community with the launch of the district’s brand new Backyard Summer Reading Program, the first program of its kind for DCS.

The Backyard Summer Reading Program is designed to keep students engaged throughout the summer through read-alouds, interactive games, hands-on activities, literacy enrichment, free books for students to take home, and free meals for children 18 and under. Meals are first-come, first-served.

District and school leaders will lead read-alouds for students and families, giving them the opportunity to connect with school principals and district leadership in a fun, relaxed, and family-friendly environment ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.

“This program is about creating memorable and educational experiences for our students, encouraging a love for learning, and bringing families together in a positive way throughout the summer,” said Superintendent Dr. Garrick Askew. “We are excited to take learning beyond the classroom and right into our own backyards.”

The Backyard Summer Reading Program will take place at the following locations:

• Wednesday, June 3, 2026 | 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Jamison Village, 705 N. Lena Street

• Wednesday, June 10, 2026 | 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Crawford Village, 602 S. Lena St.

• Wednesday, June 17, 2026 | 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Crimson Ridge, 105 Booker St.

Dothan City Schools invites families to come out, enjoy a free meal, and join Dothan City Schools for an afternoon of reading, learning, and summer fun.

Field Day: Friday, May 15th
Please see the map and instructions below:

Parents can arrive at the school at 8:15 am, and they will park in the teacher parking lot closest to the gym. Parents can travel with their child’s class through their rotation, but a child must remain with their class until you check them out. If a parent is visiting multiple children, we are asking you not to take your child to a different grade level.
Parents can purchase food from the concession stand, Kona Ice, the cotton candy truck or the ice cream truck on campus. Bathrooms will be open in the 4th grade building (See map) for parents which is located behind the playground. The main building will be closed to all guests on campus.
If you would like to check your child out during field day, you can do so by going to the table outside the side entrance.

Students will participate in water games and relays, so please send a towel and an extra change of clothes if you would like.
If your child would like to purchase items from our vendor trucks or the concession stand, please send money (cash) with them.

What an incredible day at the 45th Annual Houston County Special Olympics! 🎉 Morris Slingluff showed up, showed out, and made us SO proud!

Our students brought home 3rd place in the banner competition, and a huge shoutout to Tyson Merritt for taking 1st in the 50m dash—way to go! He was even interviewed for the news!

Every single one of our athletes placed in their events! Their hard work, determination, and spirit truly shined. Way to go!

Last Friday before spring break, our pep squad surprised the teachers and staff at Slingluff with sweet and salty treats! They also included a fun basket of eggs filled with prizes like an extra planning period, leaving 30 minutes early, and other great perks to enjoy later. Such a thoughtful way to show appreciation!
