We’re excited to share that West Michigan Partnership for Children has advanced to the final Preparation Phase of Imagination Factory, Inc Creative Cluster: Invest in Housing – A Solution to Prevent Family Separation.

This work reflects something we’ve long believed: when families have stable housing, children are more likely to stay safely at home, where they belong.

Through this next phase, we’ll partner with our community to co-design innovative solutions that shift resources upstream, investing in housing as prevention, not just responding after separation occurs. This is about advancing the system in ways that keep families together and reduce the need for foster care.

We’re just getting started, more to come!

Our commitment to children, families, and meaningful system reform continues.

WMPC is moving forward with an appeal, not to preserve our organization, but to advocate for lasting improvements in the child welfare system. We believe this work is bigger than any one agency and remains critical to advancing a proven, more accountable Michigan foster care system.

Today we gathered as a team for a final celebration, grateful that so many were able to be there. It was a meaningful time to reflect on the impact this team has had on children, families, and our community.

For years, this group showed up in powerful ways including advancing a better, more accountable foster care system. This team is truly amazing, and we are so proud of each and every one of them. What they did here mattered—and what they carry forward from it matters even more.

While this chapter is closing, a small team at WMPC will continue the work ahead and will be focused on system reform, innovation, and building a stronger future for child welfare.

March is both Women’s History Month and Social Work Month.

Throughout history, women have shaped systems of care, advocacy, and reform, often serving as the backbone of movements that advanced child welfare, family preservation, and community-based support.

At the same time, Social Work Month gives us an opportunity to recognize the incredible social workers who show up every day for children and families in foster care. Social workers are advocates, problem-solvers, counselors, collaborators, and steady supports during some of life’s most difficult seasons. Their work requires compassion, resilience, clinical skill, and an unwavering commitment to human dignity.

At WMPC, we are especially proud that so many of the leaders, care coordinators, clinicians, and system changers who have shaped our performance-based, community-driven model are women and social workers. Their dedication has strengthened safety, permanency, and well-being for children and families across Kent County.

To every woman leader and every social worker who has been part of this journey: thank you. Your impact and your work matters.

⭐️ WMPC Update: Honoring Our Team and Their Next Chapters

As we continue processing the recent Michigan Court of Claims decision, which brings this chapter of Kent County’s performance-based, community-driven foster care model to a close, we want to highlight something profoundly important: our team.

For eight years, WMPC has been powered by a talented, innovative team of passionate professionals dedicated to transforming lives and achieving better outcomes for children and families. Our team included Care Coordinators, Performance and Quality Improvement experts, finance-minded leaders, clinicians, and operational professionals who each brought unique expertise, shared purpose, and deep commitment to this work.

Our team is data-informed, values and mission-driven. We are deeply Sanctuary Model-minded, grounded in DEIB principles, trauma-responsive, and family-centered. We believe in continuous learning, accountability, and collaboration. WMPC values a workplace that embraces multi-dimensional diversity and promotes work-life balance. Our environment has always been highly collaborative.

As the landscape shifts, many of these highly skilled professionals are now seeking new opportunities to continue making a meaningful impact. With March marking Social Work Month, we are especially proud to recognize their dedication, professionalism, and heart. Their work has contributed to transforming lives and strengthening futures for children and families across Kent County.

To our team: thank you. Your leadership, innovation, and compassion have helped build a stronger, more responsive system and brighter futures for children.

To our community partners: if you are looking for mission-driven, knowledgeable, and trauma-informed professionals, we cannot speak highly enough of the talent, character, and leadership within WMPC.

WMPC Update 📢

Today, West Michigan Partnership for Children is sharing an important update with our Kent County community. The Michigan Court of Claims has ruled in favor of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, finding the department’s revised foster care funding approach complies with state statute.

While WMPC respectfully disagrees, this decision effectively ends Kent County’s performance-based, community-driven foster care model as it has operated for the past eight years.

Since 2017, this community has built something meaningful together. Our performance-based model has contributed to:
• 94% decrease in children re-entering foster care after reunification
• 78% of children diverted from institutional care
• 71% increase in placements with relatives since 2022
• 97% of funding directed to programs and services supporting children and families

These outcomes reflect the dedication of foster parents, providers, advocates, and our incredible WMPC team. We pursued every available avenue to preserve a stable, outcomes-focused system for children and families. Although this ruling changes our path forward, it does not diminish the progress achieved or the measurable impact made in Kent County.

We remain deeply grateful to the Kent County community for your partnership and shared commitment to children and families.
