PROCLAMATION
25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001
WHEREAS, twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, our country experienced a day that changed America forever; and
WHEREAS, that morning, terrorists attacked our nation, taking the lives of 2,977 innocent souls, including 343 New York City firefighters, 23 New York City Police Officers, 37 Port Authority Police Officers, and 55 members of the United States Armed Forces, as well as the 40 passengers and crew aboard United Airlines Flight 93, which came down in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, at the Pentagon, firefighters, police officers, military personnel, medical personnel, and other first responders confronted unimaginable danger and worked to rescue the injured and protect those around them; and
WHEREAS, in Pennsylvania, the selfless and patriotic souls aboard Flight 93 faced an impossible situation and chose to act, sacrificing their own lives and preventing their aircraft from reaching its intended target; and
WHEREAS, here in the Borough of Dormont, we are fortunate to know the men and women who answer that same call when our neighbors need help. Our Dormont Police officers, Dormont Fire Department firefighters, the person of Medical Rescue Team South Authority, 911 dispatchers, and other first responders understand something that September 11 made painfully clear: when the worst happens, someone has to run toward it; and
WHEREAS, the events of September 11 are also a story of the redemptive strength of our nation. Galvanized through vigilance, courage, and compassion, Americans stood on guard for our communities and our country. Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers helped strangers. And countless people responded to tragedy not with fear alone, but with service, sacrifice, and an enduring commitment to one another; and
WHEREAS, twenty-five years later, we must never forget the lives lost in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in the fields of Shanksville. We remember the families whose lives were changed forever. And most especially, we remember the first responders who gave everything they had—and, in far too many cases, everything they had to give; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that I, Jason Walsh, Mayor of the Borough of Dormont, on behalf of the residents of the Borough of Dormont, hereby recognize September 11, 2026, as the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001, and recognize this day as
Patriot Day
and
National Day of Service and Remembrance
in the Borough of Dormont.
