For years, Melodie and Nhu dreamed of buying a home together. đź’™

These sisters wanted a place where their family could put down roots, but finding something affordable wasn’t easy. Homes within their price range often needed significant work, while others were too far from the communities they wanted to stay connected to. After several years of planning and preparation, they found a renovated home in Brockton that felt like the right place to start.

The journey wasn’t without challenges. Before they could buy, they needed to pay off debt, and navigating the financial requirements of homeownership felt overwhelming at times. Through housing counseling and programs like MAHA’s STASH, they received guidance and assistance that helped make their goal achievable.

Today, Melodie, Nhu, and their brother live in the home together. While they know they may eventually outgrow it, they see it as the first step toward a larger dream: creating stability and opportunity for their family. 🏠

Yesterday, members of the Homeownership Action Network came together to meet with Secretary Matias, who leads Governor Healey’s Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, to advocate for expanded homeownership opportunities across Massachusetts. 🏠

Representing organizations from across the state, we shared a common message: first-generation, low- and moderate-income, and BIPOC homebuyers deserve a fair shot at homeownership.

We were excited to hear Secretary Matias speak about the importance of homeownership as a pathway to stability, opportunity, and generational wealth.

This meeting was an important first step—and we’re excited that the conversation will continue later this summer. Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared your experiences, and demonstrated the strength of our growing movement.

When we organize together, we build more pathways to homeownership. đź’™

Thank you to Senator Miranda and Representative Worrell for your leadership in championing STASH and expanding pathways to homeownership across Massachusetts.

At a time when the racial homeownership and wealth gaps remain some of the greatest barriers to economic equity in our state, your commitment to supporting aspiring homeowners sends a powerful message: everyone deserves a fair shot at building a future through homeownership.

As budget negotiations continue in Conference Committee, we’re grateful for your continued partnership and leadership in ensuring this critical resource remains available to the families who need it most.

Thank you for standing with homebuyers and helping make the dream of homeownership more accessible for the next generation.

We are grateful for the vision and leadership of Lee Pelton as President & CEO of . Under his leadership, the Boston Foundation became a key partner in expanding homeownership across Greater Boston — including supporting MAHA's own STASH Program, which provides first-generation homebuyers with down payment assistance and financial literacy.
Thank you, Lee. Your investment in our communities will open doors for years to come. 🏠

“Look daughter, this is the house.” “This one?” “Yes, I’m going to do it now.”

This determination is what characterizes Aned, a joyful, first-generation, first-time STASH homeowner. She is an extremely hard-working single mother who cares deeply about community. “I took my first-time homebuyer class 3 years ago and it has been a big challenge trying to find something that fit my budget, especially if I looked close to my job in Boston.” So when she saw what-is-now-her-home, Aned felt empowered by the “valuable knowledge, guidance, and support” she got from STASH to put in an offer. The availability of STASH funding to buy anywhere in the state gave her the possibility to provide her kids a stable home they can come back to.

To keep the door to homeownership open for more people like Aned, we need funding for STASH! Let’s urge our state legislators to support affordable homeownership programs. Reach out to your state Senator and ask them to support STASH Amendment #91 or sign our petition at the link in our bio. 💙
