DCSD Purchases Land Near New Sequoyah School Site in Doraville (see article linked below).

"The DeKalb County Board of Education approved the purchase of 8.5 acres along Stewart Road, adjacent to the new Sequoyah Middle and High School site, this October. The $365,000 purchase will serve several functions for the District.

It will bring the site acreage closer to the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) guidelines. The GaDOE guidelines require a 48-acre site for the size of the school being built, although the District was granted a waiver for the current site. The purchase of the Stewart Road property brings the total site up from 33.5 acres to 42 acres.

This purchase provides the District greater control over the Stewart Road right-of-way. The Stewart Road right-of-way is important for ensuring sufficient access to the rear of the new school being built. Having ownership of three sides of the right-of-way gives the District greater flexibility in how the site can utilize this right-of-way in the future. It also eliminates the previous property owner's ability to construct or use the property for personal goals.

The land provides space for the school to expand its site. While much of the property is undevelopable, it does create a natural security buffer to the rear of the school as well as additional property for potential site stormwater drainage requirements. However, a portion of the northern part of the property is suitable for future construction, such as additional parking and field space.

The construction project for the new Sequoyah Middle and High School, totaling $228,661,425, was fully approved at the Board meeting on April 21. For summary information and timelines, please click here."

I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Firefighter Preston Fant, a 21-year veteran of the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department. Just last month, I had the privilege of welcoming members of the department to our city council meeting, and it is heartbreaking to now mourn with them in the wake of this loss.

Firefighter Fant’s courage, dedication, and leadership represent the very best of public service. As the first firefighter in our county’s history to lose his life while fighting a fire, his sacrifice will always be remembered.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, five children, and fellow firefighters. I will continue to hold his family and the department in my thoughts during this difficult time.
