Nature offers some of the best lessons. For the last 2 years, the asparagus garden had made a brave but feeble effort, putting forth shoots so delicate and spindly, a breeze would knock them over. This year, I though I should just move on and I had decided to cover the area to extend the nearby garden and put in another sitting area and fire pit. The sketches are done and I was just waiting to catch up with Bill to go over the plans. However, today, this lovely spring day, I was walking past the disheveled little plot I was about to give up on, and there they were, a dozen hardy asparagus stalks which seem to have grown overnight through the mulch. I was a little startled, they had grown so fast and so robust, I had a momentary vision of Jack and the Bean Stalk, but alas, no magic seeds were involved, so these will only go as far as the dinner table. What I learned from nature today, is to not underestimate others. Just when you think you can’t wait anylonger, you might just be surprised.....at their resilience and effort.....or perhaps at your own strength to turn a negative into a positive. Life is too short to dwell in negativity but in a rush to have everything you think you want, be patient with those trying to grow around you, you might just be pleasantly surprised one day.
