History of 104 North Main Street Dolgeville, NY
1868 Brockett’s Bridge shows a hotel there.
1894 Sanborn map shows a two story dwelling on the south with a feed store on the north side of the building.

In 1895, James E. Crowley moved into the Leavitt Block that was on the corner of N. Main and East State Street by the bridge. He ran the Meat Market there. There was a jewelry store on the other side of the building. It was listed as 98 N. Main Street and later renumbered to 104 N. Main Street.
1898 Sanborn Map shows Meat market on the north, in the middle barber and a jewelry store on the side of the building.
1902 -98 Crowley Meat Market 1906 Crowley Meat Market and a feed store on the south side of the building.
1912 Sanborn map shows a 100 barber shop was 2 stories on the north side, 102 meat market in the middle and 104 flour and feed store on the south side are 3 stories.
By 1912 102 N. Street -James E. Crowley has a partner Reinhardt Ortlieb. The new partnership is called Crowley & Ortlieb Meat Market.
1925 Sanborn Map

Reinhardt Ortlieb bought out James E. Crowley. The meat market remained at 102 N. Main Street until1970.
1971 is vacant. By 1973 it was known as Foster’s Corner Market run by Harry F. Foster.
1975-1077 – Relique Shoppe – Antiques owned by Esther Stewart.
1978- Broken Arrow Second Hand Store - Ray Cahill
1979 vacant
1980 Henry Shepard 2ne hand shop
1984 - 1985 Forget Me Not Florist – Anne Jacquay
1986-2002 Vacant
2003 - Austin’s Plumbing and Heating owned by Larry Austin. I don’t know when it was sold.
100 North Main Street from 1947 – 1962 Market Basket Corp. was run by William H. Kuehnle. After that 100 is listed as vacant.
102 Archibald McCarthy lived there with his wife Ruth 1947-1971

History of the Sullivan and Snyder Law Office Building (Central Block) 8 South Main Street
1891 – Zephi George Brockett (1861-1940) ran a drug and grocery store. Also ws manager of the Central New York Telephone & Telegraph
1897 – John Wilson lawyer
1897-1900 – Edward A. Brown (1845-1912) lawyer
1898 - Sanborn Map shows a 2 story building with a hot house on the back south-west corner. Village Hall on the 1st floor and on the 2nd floor was a watchmaker. There were porches on the south and north side with on the back. Carl Hoerz (1876-1985) was jeweler and watchmaker from (1900-1905), when he moved his business to Little Falls. His brother Eugene has the business in Dolgeville from (1906-1917). Sometime between 1917 and 1924 Eugene moved the business to 51 North Main Street.
1906 - Patrick Murphy had a law firm in the Central Block next door to the Barrett Block which was built in 1912. In 1913 Patrick moved his firm into the Barrett Bloc on the corner of north Main and Elm Street.
1914 - At 6 N. Main Street and 8 N. Main Street where in the Central Block building. New York Telephone Company was in 6 and Eugene Hoerz jeweler was in 8.
1924 - Utica Gas & Electric 8 S. Main Street, Fred Unser District Superintendent Central Block.
1928 - John L. & Elizabeth Foley lived at 8 N. Main Street. Elizabeth was the chief operator and Fred Unser was the District Superintendent of the Utica Gas & Electric Company.
1936-1990 Charles Sullivan had his law practice there until 1982. In January of 1982 Gerard Snyder joined the firm and it became Sullivan and Snyder. Charles died in 1990. Gerard is running the firm to this day.
1947-1951 John M. Scott had a phonograph records, Central New York Corp. and Hopson’s Radio Service.

On July 4, 1902, during the Tri-County Fireman's Convention in Dolgeville at 6:00 p.m. Leo A. Stevens made a parachute jumps from his hot air balloon. It was launched from what is today's parking lot behind the former M&T Bank.

Leo is credited with over 3,000 balloon ascensions.

Leo was born March 9, 1877 in Cleveland, Ohio and died May 8, 1944 in Bardonia, New York. He is buried in Fly Creek, New York.

Private William H. Lewis (ca. 1842-1862) was born in the Town of Manheim, Herkimer County, New York, the son of Jesse Rensselear (1795-1861) and Elizabeth Thumb Lewis (1800-1874). Jesse and Elizabeth are buried in the Upper Snell Bush Cemetery in the Town of Manheim. Besides William, the Lewis’s had Jabez (1825-1871), Sylvanus (1832-?), Emma (1839-1904), Peter (1838-1916), Alonzo ca. 1840-?), and Horace R. (1844-1909).

Three of the Lewis brothers fought in the Civil War. They were:
William H. Lewis enlisted in the Civil War August 15, 1861 C. K 34th Regiment. He was killed at the Battle of Antietam September 17, 1862 and is buried at Antietam National Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Virginia. I was fortunate to have visited the battlefield and cemetery in October of 2024.

Sylvanus S. Lewis Age, 28 years. Enlisted, August 8, 1862, at Syracuse, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. E , August 12, 1862; deserted, September 13,1862, at Chain Bridge, Md.

Horace Lewis Age, 18 years. Enlisted, July 22, 1862, at Little Falls, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. A, August 23, 1862; transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps, November 13, 1863; mustered out, August 22, 1865, as of Fifty-seventh Company, Second Battalion, at Satterlee Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.
