We work very close with our neighboring agency in Mineral Point and encourage members of that community to continue showing their support for the Mineral Point Police Department! Let’s keep making our communities stronger and safer together.
Support for the Mineral Point Police Department and awareness to what could happen to your police departments with tough budget decisions.
As your Iowa County Sheriff, I want to bring attention to a growing concern in our communities—law enforcement staffing and public safety.
Mineral Point is facing potential cuts to its police force, and I want to be absolutely clear: reducing 24-hour police coverage will directly impact community safety.
The Mineral Point Police Department responds to nearly 1,500 calls per year—from life-threatening trauma incidents and accidents to school safety and emergencies requiring CPR. Their presence is not optional, it’s essential.
With over 2,500 residents and a bustling tourism sector, the actual population at any moment is much higher. That means more calls, more emergencies—and a greater need for officers.
Let’s not forget our kids: School Resource Officers in Mineral Point and our communities are vital. They protect our children, foster trust, and teach safety—an investment in our future.
I want to be clear—I do not place blame on municipal councils. These are incredibly difficult decisions, and as Sheriff, I see firsthand how tight budgets impact all of us. Iowa County is also facing tough financial realities. Municipalities across our region are doing their best to serve with the resources they have, and I respect that.
I also want to say this: I truly appreciate the tremendous support our communities have for law enforcement. It means everything to our deputies and officers. We’ve built trust together—and we want to keep it that way. That trust is grounded in strong, visible, responsive policing—and that requires full staffing and 24-hour coverage.
Right now, the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office operates with just 15 deputies, though we should have 24 to meet national averages. We simply can’t take on additional city coverage without compromising service to the entire county.
I urge the citizens of Mineral Point and leaders across Iowa County: Support your local police department. Keep them fully staffed. Protect 24-hour coverage. These officers are critical to the safety and strength of our communities.
