On Wednesday, August 5th, the Iowa County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit hosted a multi-jurisdiction K-9 training at Governor Dodge State Park and Dodgeville Fire Department. This group of K-9 Teams train together once a month as part of their monthly required training hours.

This training consisted most notably of acclimating the K-9's to traveling in fire department UTV's. There are times when K-9 Teams are needed for tracking individuals and their last known location, which is the best starting point, is not accessible via regular vehicle. Getting them there with the use of UTV's is often the best option but doing it for the first time live is not preferred.

We are pleased to say all doggos did a great job!!

Thank you to all of the K-9 Teams, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Governor Dodge State Park, Dodgeville Fire Department, Barneveld-Brigham Fire Department, and Arena Fire & EMS for joining us for an amazing and entertaining morning!!

Today we're officially launching our campaign to help fund the future of the Iowa County Sheriff's Office K9 Program.

After seven years of dedicated service, K9 Sam will retire on December 31, 2026. As Sam enjoys a well-earned retirement, we are preparing the next K9 team to continue protecting Iowa County.

Training and equipping a police K9 are a significant investment, but it is one that saves lives, protects deputies, locates missing people, and keeps illegal drugs out of our communities. This training will take place in October.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 through community donations.

Every dollar—whether it's $5 or $500—brings us one step closer to ensuring Iowa County continues to have a highly trained K9 team serving our citizens.

We've always said Iowa County has one of the most supportive communities anywhere, and we're excited to see what we can accomplish together.

Happy Birthday K-9 Sam! 🎉

K9 Sam is a Czech Shepherd, born on this day in the Netherlands in Northwestern Europe. He joined the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office in 2023 and his handler is Sgt. Nate Kennicker.

Sam is trained in tracking, apprehension, and narcotic detection! Sam’s vet is the Dodgeville Vet Clinic and his food is sponsored by Alisha’s Best of Friends Pet Care & Nutrition Center of Dodgeville!

Even though today is Sam’s day off work, I can assure you he is home resting and celebrating accordingly! 🎂
