Dodge City Fire Department

Dodge City Fire Department Proudly serving the people of Dodge City, Kansas since 1887.

09/11/2026

Today, we honor the lives lost, the heroes who served, and the strength of a nation that came together on September 11, 2001.

Each year, YMCA member and local firefighter Matt Johnson honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice by completing the 9/11 Stair Climber Challenge.

Today, Matt completed the challenge in 39 minutes while wearing approximately 100 lbs. of firefighter equipment.

The 9/11 Stair Climb challenges participants to climb the equivalent of 110 stories, the height of the World Trade Center towers, in remembrance of the firefighters who made that climb on September 11, 2001.

Matt, thank you for carrying their memory with you, and thank you to all of the first responders who continue to serve our community.

This weekend, you’ll see members of the Dodge City Fire Department out in our community with boots in hand, collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
But do you know WHY firefighters Fill the Boot?
It’s a firefighter tradition that goes back more than 70 years. What began with firefighters stepping up to help families affected by muscular dystrophy grew into a nationwide tradition, with fire departments across the country raising funds to support children and adults living with over 300 different forms of neuromuscular disease and ALS.
Today, we’re proud to continue that tradition right here in Dodge City.
The money placed in our boots helps support MDA’s work to advance research, provide access to specialized care, advocate for families, and provide resources and opportunities for people living with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related neuromuscular diseases.

🪣 FREE FIREWORKS BUCKETS
Help Prevent Fires After the Celebration

Pick up your FREE Fireworks Bucket at the Dodge City Fire Department on Soule Street

How It Works
1. 🎆 Place used fireworks in your bucket.
2. 💧 Fill the bucket with water.
3. ⏰ Let them soak overnight.
4. 🗑️ Throw them away safely.

Even fireworks that appear to be out can reignite hours later, causing fires in trash cans, garages, and other areas.

Why It Matters:

The Bucket Brigade is a community safety program designed to reduce fires caused by improperly discarded fireworks. By soaking used fireworks before disposal, you help protect your home, your neighbors, and our community.

"Our focus is on prevention, not response. This program helps us reduce calls before they occur."

Celebrate Safely. Dispose Responsibly.

Fire Marshal Bill wants to show you something!! 😂 Remember the mantra: "Soak them before you toss them"! The best way to keep the flames to a minimum is to practice safety, folks. We’ve still got some buckets left for your firework-soaking needs. Swing by and grab yours before they disappear. Please note that it is one bucket per household.

This year, the Dodge City Fire Department, in partnership with the Kansas Fire Marshal office and the American Pyrotechnics Safety and Education Foundation, has launched the Bucket Brigade program. This targeted fire prevention initiative aims to reduce fires caused by improper disposal of fireworks after July 4th celebrations.

The Bucket Brigade is a community-driven program designed to prevent fires from the improper disposal of used fireworks. It draws inspiration from the historical "bucket brigade," where neighbors helped one another, but in this case, it focuses on helping neighbors safely dispose of firework remnants.

The program encourages residents to soak used fireworks in a bucket of water overnight before throwing them away. This simple step prevents spent fireworks from reigniting in trash, garages, or outdoor areas, which can occur even after they seem extinguished.

"We are focused on prevention, not response. This program helps us reduce calls before they happen."

For more information, please visit https://www.celebratesafely.org

The Dodge City Fire Department will distribute buckets starting Monday, June 22nd, from 8 AM to 5 PM at the fire station on Soule Street.

We have 100 buckets available on a first-come, first-served basis—one bucket per household.
