This morning, Friday 8/1/15, a historic marker was placed just east of the intersection of Avenue P and Comanche on the northeast side of Dodge City.

The marker commemorates the 1914 Dodge City 300 motorcycle race which, in its day was the biggest and most important motorcycle event in the world. The race drew riders from all over the world as well as all the major manufacturers racing teams. In attendance were both William Harley and Walter Davidson who came to witness a poor performance of their mostly privateer racers.

Hendee Indian of Springfield, Massachusetts brought their best racers with Glen Boyd winning the race on an Indian followed by Bill Brier on a Thor and Carl Gowdy on an Excelsior. The 300 mile race was held on a 2 mile long dirt oval track just northeast of Dodge City near where the marker stands today. You can still see part of the race track outline on Google Earth to this day.

A local non-profit, the Dodge City 300, held a Centennial Celebration in 2015 which drew riders from across the US. They raised the funds for the historic marker. Dodge City can be very proud of their pivotal position in the history of world motorcycling.
