The Sheriff's Office would like to make the community aware of several reports of fraud we have taking using a process known as
check washing.
Check washing is a form of fraud where criminals steal checks from mailboxes, use to erase the ink, and rewrite the payee and amount while keeping the original signature. This stolen check is then cashed or deposited, often in a much higher amount, causing significant financial loss.
Stolen from personal mailboxes or blue U.S. Postal Service collection boxes. To rewrite the payee and amount, typically increasing the total, and transferring funds to their own accounts. Beyond the money, they can use bank routing/account numbers for further identity theft, such as creating counterfeit checks or opening new accounts.
How to Protect Yourself
Use Gel Pens: Write checks with permanent, black gel ink (e.g., Uniball Gel Pens) as it is harder to wash off compared to ballpoint ink.
Avoid Mailboxes: Do not leave checks in your personal mailbox for outgoing mail; drop them directly at the post office.
Use Digital Payments: Pay bills online, use ACH transfers, or digital apps instead of paper checks if you can.
Regularly check bank activity and set up alerts for transactions to identify fraud quickly and notify you of suspicious activity .

Steps to Take If You Are a Victim
1. Notify Your Bank:
2. Report to Authorities immediately: Police and Postal Inspector
3. Contact Credit Bureaus.
