The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is responsible for coordinating state and federal resources to assist local government in response and relief activities in the event of an emergency or disaster, as well as coordinating homeland security initiatives and various federal grants.

Seats are limited and include topics in emergency management, fire and EMS, homeland security, and hazardous materials. Pay attention to registration deadlines to make sure you don't miss out.

This week at EMHSD we celebrate the dedicated service of three of our district coordinators. F/Lt. Gabriel Covey, S/Lt. Tim Ketvirtis and S/Lt. Joshua Collins are retiring after 30 years with the Michigan State Police.

The final years of their successful careers were spent supporting emergency management efforts across the state, helping communities prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies and disasters. Their leadership, professionalism and commitment to public service have left a lasting impact.

We thank them for their decades of service, mentorship and unwavering dedication and wish them all the best in their next chapters.

Preliminary damage assessments to determine potential need for FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency's Public Assistance program are now underway this week following last month’s severe weather. Teams are meeting virtually with municipalities and conducting in-person site visits, including in Grand Traverse County, where crews surveyed damage to roadways.

Our Hazardous Materials Training Unit has been busy this month training BASF-Wyandotte responders in a Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (40-Hour HAZWOPER) EPA 165.5 course. Participants also completed HAZWOPER 8-Hour Refreshers and Incident Command System training. Courses like this help train responders to properly respond in the event of a Hazmat situation. We appreciate the continued trust with their training needs.

Joint Preliminary damage assessments (PDAs) for FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency's Individual Assistance Program are now complete! Teams visited 30 counties across the state over the last week to survey flooding and tornado damage, the largest joint PDA effort to date.

Not every damaged property was visited in person during the assessment process, but all reported damage information provided by local officials and residents is included in the overall assessment.

Next, teams will meet with municipalities to assess potential for FEMA's Public Assistance Program. All data collected will help the governor determine whether to request a federal disaster declaration from the president.

DAMAGE ASSESSMENT UPDATE: Crews continue to make progress documenting April flooding, storm and tornado damage across the state. Today, boots were on the ground at Black Lake in Cheboygan County assessing damage for FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency's Individual Assistance program.

Data collected will help determine whether the governor requests a federal disaster declaration from the president.
