17 first responders from across the state completed a ten-day long Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Technician training. During this extensive training, responders participated in 50 skills that are required by NFPA 470 and passed a 100-question test. All knowledge and skills technicians must know, from incident analysis to termination, are covered in depth. This includes hazmat chemistry, container identification, construction features, and leak points, as well as product control and decontamination operations. Congratulations to these responders for completing this training and helping make Michigan safer!

šŸ””This weekā€™s severe weather serves as a reminder of the importance of having a plan to stay safe. MSP/EMHSD is working to bring help to residents across the state. REMEMBER: You have until Monday, June 15 to submit an application for the Michigan Safe Room Rebate Program. If the state is selected for the program homeowners may receive a rebate covering 75% of eligible costs to install and construct a tornado safe room.

The heat is on across the lower portion of the state where a heat advisory is in affect today as heat indices peak around 100 degrees. After at least two tornadoes touched down yesterday, the threat of severe weather continues later today and again tomorrow. Damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes will be possible over the next few days. Donā€™t get caught off guard!

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has requested federal disaster aid in response to severe storms, heavy rain, rapid snowmelt and nine confirmed tornadoes that caused widespread damage and severe flooding in 43 counties across Michigan between April 10 and 21. If approved, the governorā€™s request would allow federal aid to start flowing directly to families, businesses, and communities.

Thatā€™s why we recently joined the Plymouth Township Police Department and other partners for a tabletop exercise focused on scenarios involving severe weather, traffic management, emergency medical response, public information, and multi-agency coordination.

Joint preliminary damage assessments (PDAs) for FEMAā€™s Public Assistance (PA) program following Aprilā€™s severe weather are now complete. Teams from MSP/EMHSD and FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency conducted site visits across the state to document damaged roads, public infrastructure and other municipal damage and response costs to evaluate potential eligibility. The Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex was among locations visited.

Information collected will help determine whether Michigan meets the federal thresholds necessary for Governor Gretchen Whitmer to request a major disaster declaration from the president.
