June 1-7 each year is National CPR and AED Awareness Week, spotlighting how lives can be saved if more Americans know CPR and how to use an AED. Did you know about 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes? If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. Be the difference for your parent, spouse, or child. What if it were them?

In 2007, the AHA in coalition with the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council worked collaboratively to designate a National CPR and AED Awareness Week federally. On December 13, 2007, Congress unanimously passed a resolution to set aside June 1-7 each year as National CPR and AED Awareness Week to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans know CPR and how to use an AED. Our campaign reinforces these skills but also places importance on the willingness of bystanders to act in a cardiac arrest emergency.

Communities are invited to celebrate National CPR and AED Awareness Week by learning more.

Thanks to Greg Bowen and TLC Tree Service, and with the help of Terry Hill, our resident local cemetery preservation volunteer and historian, “keeper of Dimondale’s forgotten stories,” working carefully among these historic grounds, one more forgotten piece of Dimondale history has been brought back into the light.

Sometimes history is hiding just beneath the leaves.

While working in the historic Dimondale Cemetery, Greg Bowen and the crew from TLC Tree Service came across the weathered headstone of Civil War veteran David Fish Morrison — a man whose story had nearly faded with time.

At first glance, it was simply another old stone among many. But research soon revealed something remarkable.

David Fish Morrison was born in 1825 in New York and later served in Company D of the 151st New York Infantry during the Civil War. His regiment fought in some of the war’s most brutal battles, including The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and the campaigns leading to Appomattox.
Even more incredible, wartime newspaper reports once listed:

“Sergeant David Morrison — missing.”
For a period of time, his family and hometown may have believed he had been lost in battle. Yet somehow, Morrison survived the war, returned home, and eventually made his way west to Michigan, where he spent his later years in Windsor Township.

He died in 1899 and was laid to rest in Dimondale Cemetery, where his story quietly waited more than a century to be rediscovered.

Every stone has a story.

And every story matters.
