National Police Week 2026 runs from May 10–16, 2026. It honors law enforcement officers, particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, with May 15, 2026 designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day. We solemnly commemorate the officers who gave their lives in the line of duty across our Nation. Thank you to all the Law Enforcement Officers who put their lives on the line everyday. God Bless those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in this Honorable Profession. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

I want to take the time to recognize and thank our Jail Staff at the Castro County Jail. National Correctional Officers and Employees Week is observed from May 3–9, 2026. Established in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan, this week honors the dedicated personnel in jails, prisons, and community corrections for their role in ensuring public safety, maintaining secure facilities, and facilitating rehabilitation. The Jail Staff consist of Fabian Salinas, Jail Administrator; Skyla Elisondo, Jail Lieutenant, and Jailers: Evangelina Aguero, Michael Hernandez, Gabriel Gonzalez, Chris Gonzalez, Maria Flores, Xavier Ramos, Analyce Robertson and Javier Flores.

Sheriff Sal Rivera attended the Active Shooter Incident Management training in Canyon, Texas put on by C3 Pathways/NCIER, TEEX & ALERRT. The training started on Tuesday April 14th and ended on Thursday April 16th. The training was held on the WT A&M Campus. The training covered a wide variety of situations and how to prepare and handle complex incidents and attacks. Some of the law enforcement agencies represented were from ISD PDs, City Police Departments, County Sheriff's Offices, Texas DPS Criminal Intelligence Division, Texas Game Warden, Texas Office of Inspector General, Fire Departments and EMS. The instructors were top notch.

The Castro County Sheriff's Office wants to recognize and thank the Dispatchers for all they do for our citizens and the emergency services they dispatch. April 12-18, 2026 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. Sheriff's Office dispatchers are: Brittany Llamas, Communications Supervisor and dispatchers: Mischa Baldwin, Felicia Rodriguez, Reba Cuevas, Rachel Castillo and Sal Ortiz. Thank you all for what you do for our communities, citizens and all of the first responders.

An Emergency Alert System Test will be conducted on Thursday, April 2, 2026, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The purpose of this test is to ensure LOCAL Alert Systems are working properly, as well as improving emergency preparedness. Castro residents may receive TEST alerts via phone, email or text messages. All messages will clearly state that this is ONLY A TEST no emergency is occurring.
