The office has received several calls and seen posts about this bug in gardens and yards (pictured). So we talked to our IPM Specialist, John Thobe.
He shared that this is Mozena Obtusa (common name leaf-footed bug). They are being seen all over right now, and were in 2022. He shared this article with some great information.
https://agrilifetoday.tamu.edu/2022/07/14/insurgence-of-mozena-bug-concerns-crop-producers-homeowners-alike/

Some Things to Know:
*They are annoying but not harmful to humans, pets, or most homeowner plants.
*They typically phase out pretty quickly and aren't an all-summer pest.

If you have other questions or need more information, feel free to contact your local county extension office.

Week 1 of the our annual Terrific Tuesday series at Rhoads Memorial Library!!
Our Tuesday program has a book reading and fun activity with a snack!
Today started this years theme of Unearthed. Learning about dirt and soil layers with Kristie Keys, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service - Castro/Hale/Lamb County Agronomy agent!

The 18 youth that attended enjoyed a book all about dirt and then made their own dirt!
With
🥨 pretzels for rocks
🪨 pudding for subsoil
🍫 chocolate chips for worm and insect droppings
🥥 shredded coconut for sand
✔️crushed Oreos for topsoil
🐛 and a gummy worm for on top

They all enjoyed this version of dirt!

Plus they got two books from Dimmitt Area Retired Teachers Assocaition. And many started or worked on their list for prizes for the summer reading program!

We will be back next week with a special guest!
Tuesday 4pm at Rhoads Library!

New World screwworm is a serious livestock (as well as pets, wildlife and humans) pest that requires awareness and quick action.

The good news: experts, agencies and producers are not starting from scratch. Preparation and planning have been in place.

What matters now is staying vigilant and recognizing the signs early.

Inspect. Report. Stay informed.

The Castro County Burn Ban has been lifted until further notice. It is asked that persons burning use extreme caution, especially when wind speeds are above 15 mph. If you are going to burn large trash pits, please call the Sheriff's Office at 806-647-3311 so that we are aware that it is a controlled burn. This helps not to have to page out fire departments if not necessary.
