Mr. A’s Minute: Episode XX, Part III: Courage Under Pressure

In this week’s Mr. A’s Minute, we’re continuing our series on ordinary heroes of 9/11 with Lt. Col. Marilyn Willis, a Congressional Affairs officer at the Pentagon. Lt. Col. Willis was in a conference room meeting when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. Immersed in darkness, Lt. Col. Willis led a group of people on her hands and knees to a nearby window. There, her and a colleague helped people escape, and Willis only escaped herself when she was ordered to by her superior. Lt. Col. Willis is another example of an ordinary person who thought of others safety before her own in the face of crisis.

All PennDOT driver license and photo centers, including the Riverfront Office Center in Harrisburg, will be closed Saturday, Sept. 5, through Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.

Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT's Driver and Vehicle Services website, www.dmv.pa.gov.

Earlier this week, I attended an award ceremony honoring American Legion Post 26, Dillsburg PA for their work in our community. They received Play PA for Charity's Community Impact Award, recognizing them for using their gaming programs to raise money for school supplies, food pantries and veteran organizations. Congratulations to Post Commander Rodney Carberry and everyone at the Legion on this recognition!

The Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) are inviting public input about their draft 2025-2035 Pennsylvania Wildlife Action Plan.

The draft plan and public comment form are available online at pa.gov/wildlife-action-plan. Comments must be submitted by Sept. 19.

According to the agencies, the Pennsylvania Wildlife Action Plan was first developed in 2005 and has since served as the Commonwealth’s blueprint “to conserve Pennsylvania’s native fish and wildlife, maintain resilient habitat, and protect and enhance Species of Greatest Conservation Need.” As required by Congress, state wildlife action plans must be revised no less than every 10 years.

A wildlife action plan approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is required for states to receive State and Tribal Wildlife Grant Program funds. The Pennsylvania Wildlife Action Plan is scheduled to be delivered to the USFWS by Oct. 1.

I had an awesome time this morning watching vets take flight at Capital City Airport right here in the 92nd. These flights were made possible because of a partnership between Dream Flights and the PA Healthcare Association, providing free flights to seven veterans living in long-term care communities. Thanks to everyone involved for giving these heroes the experience of a lifetime!

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ (DMVA) Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is now accepting applications for its first class of 2027, which begins in January.

The academy’s mission is to provide 16- to 18-year-old teens in jeopardy of not graduating on time or dropping out of school with a second chance at learning skills such as leadership, self-discipline, health and hygiene, public service, physical fitness and more. There is no tuition cost to attend, and meals, housing, uniforms and school supplies are provided at no charge.

With KSCA’s online eligibility checker at pa.gov/ksca, applicants can quickly confirm their eligibility before completing the full application. Applicants can also request a mailed form by emailing [email protected] or calling 717-861-7767 or 717-861-8831.

Mr. A’s Minute: Episode XX, Part II: The Man in the Red Bandana

This week on Mr. A’s Minute, we’re continuing our series on ordinary heroes of September 11th with Welles Crowther, also known as the “Man in the Red Bandana.” A stock trader working in the South Tower of the World Trade Center, Welles chose to stay and help nearly 20 people escape from the building rather than flee for safety. Though there is no dishonor in fleeing, reflect and consider whether you would be a Welles and give of yourself to save others.
