Dear Friends of NYCHAPS,

You may have heard about the proposed reconstruction of Route 15, which has been in the works for a couple of years, or received an invitation from PennDOT to attend an informal, informational meeting. We strongly encourage you to attend.

This is history in the making, as anyone who remembers what the area was like before Route 15 became a major highway can tell you.

Along with all the businesses and property owners along the Rt 15 corridor, NYCHAPS’ Dills Tavern and Eichelberger Distillery operations will be directly and significantly impacted by not only the 5-year planned construction, but also the end result. The impact is not confined to only those properties facing the highway, but all of Dillsburg; every road that crosses it, and the lives of everyone needing to get anywhere. Attending the public meeting is an important step we can all take to learn about the plan, ask questions, and respectfully provide feedback before it is finalized. We ask that when you sign in, note that you are a friend of NYCHAPS.

The format is an open house, where the plans and information will be on display and individuals are able to ask the PennDOT project team questions conversationally, as opposed to a public hearing, where your question is heard by everyone present. You do not need to be there the entire time, but be sure to sign in, register your concern about how the project will impact NYCHAPS and the Dills Tavern property, and fill out a comment form. A strong show of support matters as much now as it has for the past 250 years. The best impression is made by being there in person, and following up with a comment, though you do not have to attend to comment.

Date: June 16, 2026
Time: 5-8 pm
Location: VFW- South Mountain Post 6771, 22 W Franklin St, Dillsburg, PA

Pictured is a map of the proposed affected area.

Life in Colonial America wasn't easy. Art, as a form of expression, wasn't something for which settlers had time. However, humans have always had a desire to create beauty.

So what do you do when you desire beauty but must focus on survival? You let your creativity shine in the ordinary things of life: from fiber arts to blacksmithing, from carpentry to pottery, from masonry to rifle making.

Colonial Americans turned their ordinary tasks into unique forms of art. Spend the morning with us as we explore the different ways in which common chores were fashioned into works of art.

"And for the support of the Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor."

When the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia, copies were carried to local communities and read in public to an anxious crowd. Some celebrated the news, but not everyone was glad to hear that war was coming.

Experience what it might have felt like for local families to be gathered together in that moment, as reenactors portray the different perspectives of the community living then. You may be asked to sign up to serve in the newly formed continental army, or to sign the Oath of Allegiance! Then come together for a historically inspired meal.

Fast forward 50 years to the celebration that was held in Dillsburg in 1826 to mark the 50th anniversary of the day that 13 British colonies declared themselves independent. The final event of the evening will be a punch ceremony and toast. The punch ceremony is an adaptation of one aspect of a military dining-in. We will build a punch with each ingredient’s significance noted and offer toasts to the Sons and Daughters of Liberty as they did on this site on July 4th, 1826.

Pre-registration is required through the link below, and you must be 21 or older to attend. Dinner will consist of beef stew, homemade bread with pounded cheese spread, grand sallet of beets, historic desserts, and two beverages of choice will be offered (unlimited water), tea, lemonade or shrub, beer, wine, or hard cider. Also included is the punch for the toasts at the end.

We invite you to dress in 18th or early 19th century attire if desired.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this weekend to learn about our local history at the Dillsburg Cemetery!

We heard from Edward Kopsick and a local Northern York County homeschooler, Carter, who shared lots with us about Captain Thomas Campbell, from his climbing the military ranks to ending up in the House of Representatives.

Events like these help bring the stories of Northern York County's past to life and remind us why preserving and sharing our local heritage matters. We're grateful for the opportunity to continue educating our community and keeping these important stories alive for future generations.

What if you could hear the stories of Dillsburg’s Revolutionary War Patriots told at the very places they were laid to rest?

On Sunday, May 31, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, local students will portray Revolutionary War figures buried in our area cemeteries, sharing the stories, sacrifices, and legacies of the men who helped shape our nation.

One of those Patriots is Thomas Campbell, a Dillsburg soldier who served from the earliest days of the Revolution through Yorktown. He survived serious battle wounds, returned to service, and later became a Pennsylvania state senator.

These students have spent weeks researching the lives behind the names on these gravestones, and we hope the community will come out to support their incredible work.

This event is part of the NYCHAPS Revolutionary War Project and America250 celebrations.
