Spotted in the Park: A red-headed woodpecker!

This beautiful bird is not something many visitors get to see every day. Red-headed woodpecker populations have declined significantly over the last several decades, and they are now considered uncommon in many areas where they were once more widespread.

They prefer open woodlands, forest edges, parks, and areas with mature or dead trees that provide food and nesting habitat. For park visitors hoping to spot one, the Arboretum at Buckner Park may be one of the best places to look.

Keep your eyes open, walk quietly, and enjoy the wildlife that calls our parks home.

Source: Cornell’s All About Birds lists open woodlands, parks, forest edges and dead or dying trees among preferred habitat, and Audubon notes the species is now uncommon and local in many regions where it was once common.

The splash pad is a popular place to cool off, especially on hot summer days.

A few tips to help everyone have a better visit:
Arrive early if you can, bring water, keep an eye on your children at all times, and be patient when the park is busy. Please remember that balls, nerf guns, water guns, food, drinks, chairs, tents or umbrellas, lying on the turf and gum are not allowed on the splash pad or turf areas.

Please help us protect the park by parking only in designated parking spaces. Parking on the grass is not permitted. Vehicles parked outside designated areas may be towed at the owner’s expense.

Thank you for helping us keep our Parks safe, clean, and fun for everyone.

Summer heat can sneak up quickly.

Please make sure your family drinks plenty of water, takes breaks in the shade, and watches for signs of overheating. Slides, concrete, and play surfaces can get very hot in direct sunlight, so check surfaces before children play.

Enjoy our parks safely this summer by being aware of the environment and being prepared.

Know the signs of a heat stroke:
Body temperature of 103°F or higher
Hot, red skin that may be dry or damp
Fast, strong pulse
Confusion, slurred speech, or acting disoriented
Dizziness or fainting
Nausea or vomiting
Severe headache
Seizures
Loss of consciousness

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if someone shows these signs. Move them to a cooler place, loosen clothing, and cool them with water, wet towels, fans, or ice packs while waiting for help. Do not give anything to drink if they are confused, unconscious, or vomiting.
