🚩FYI: Dickinson, N.D. — The Bureau of Reclamation will conduct functional tests on the Dickinson Dam spillway gate on June 2, 2026. The tests will result in changing flow conditions on the Heart River through the city of Dickinson. The spillway gate was installed in the early 1980s to increase E.A. Patterson Lake's water storage capacity. "The Dickinson Dam spillway gate is routinely operated and maintained to ensure that the gate will perform as expected during flood events," said Darrin Goetzfried, manager of facilities and engineering for the Dakotas Area Office. "The planned functional tests will be used to assess the spillway gate performance as part of Reclamation’s Review and Examination Program for high hazard potential dams."

The testing will be performed between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. MDT, and the warning siren on the crest of the dam will be activated before the start of the testing. Individuals downstream are advised to be aware of the potential for changing river flow conditions.
