Last night, at the Dexter Fire Department Annual Banquet, the Town of Brownville Joint Fire District had the privilege of recognizing and honoring three of our members for their extraordinary efforts in saving a life.

Last May, TBFD was dispatched to a Cardiac Arrest on County Route 59 in the Town of Brownville. Assistant Chief Nathan Young, firefighter Scott LaSage, and EMT Drew Heise all responded in 7-3-1 from station 1. They arrived on scene in under 10 minutes from the time of the initial call to find a male who was not breathing and was in cardiac arrest. Using their training and amazing teamwork, they were able to work the patient and provide the 1st defibrillator “shock” in under a minute of arrival. The crew continued CPR and continued to work on the patient. The patient ultimately regained a pulse following the 3rd “shock” from TBFD. The patient was transported to SMC and later to Crouse Hospital.

We are extremely honored and proud to say that the patient, whose name is Hal, has made a full recovery. Hal was in attendance at the annual banquet last night with his wife and daughter. Hal’s wife briefly spoke to the members about the amazing service that we all do and how thankful they are for the men and women of the Town of Brownville Joint Fire District.

A/C Young, FF LaSage, and EMT Heise all received plaques from the TBFD, as well as the 2026 Commendation Award from office of 49th District NYS Senator Mark Walczyk for their extraordinary efforts.

Congratulations to all and thank you for your hard work and dedication to the TBFD.

Shortly after 0800 hours on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, Town of Brownville Fire was dispatched to the old Brownville Bridge on the Paddy Hill side for a report of an excavator that had gone over the embankment and into the Black River. Units 7-7-3 (Brownville Rescue), 7-1-1 (Dexter Engine), as well as chiefs 7-0-4 (T LaSage) and 7-0-3 (LJ Young), responded and arrived to find an excavator overturned in the river. The operator of the machine was out and back on land prior to the arrival of fire units. Guilfoyle Ambulance provided patient care on scene and transported the operator to the hospital.
Due to oil and diesel fuel leaking from the machine, NYS DEC was requested to respond for environmental mitigation. Additional assistance was provided by the City of Watertown Fire Department, New York State Police, and NYS DOT.

At approximately 1:45 AM on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the Town of Brownville Fire Department responded to a reported automatic fire alarm at the Mativ paper mill, located at 101 Bridge Street in the Village of Brownville. The alarm was triggered in the switchgear room.

Engine 7-1-3 from Brownville arrived and found smoke within the structure. Upon inspection, responders identified a fire originating in the electrical unit on the third floor underground of the mill. Mutual aid was requested from the City of Watertown Fire Department for an engine company, as well as from the Town of Watertown Fire Department, Sackets Harbor Fire Department, and Glen Park Fire Department.

The fire was promptly contained, and ventilation efforts were initiated to remove smoke from the building. The units remained on the scene for approximately two hours.

There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Jefferson County Fire Investigation Team.
