Think about the last time you threw something out because the date on the package made you nervous. These small decisions, when multiplied across millions of households, add up to more than 3.5 million tons of food thrown out every year in the United States due to date label confusion alone, according to ReFED.

Americans waste an estimated $19.2 billion worth of food every year, not because it’s gone bad, but because nobody can agree on what “best by,” “sell by,” and “use by” actually mean.

Breaking down food date labeling: "What Date-Labeling Phrases are Used?" from the USDA website link: https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/food-safety-basics/food-product-dating

There are no uniform or universally accepted descriptions used on food labels for open dating in the United States. As a result, there is a wide variety of phrases used on labels to describe quality dates.

Examples of commonly used phrases:

A "Best if Used By/Before" date indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date.
A "Sell-By" date tells the store how long to display the product for sale for inventory management. It is not a safety date.
A "Use-By" date is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality. It is not a safety date except when used on infant formula as described on the website.
A "Freeze-By" date indicates when a product should be frozen to maintain peak quality. It is not a purchase or safety date.
