Thank you State Representative Phil Skaggs for sharing about our testimony today to the State House Appropriations Subcommittee on School Aid and Education.

I’m in the k-12 school aid committee, listening to testimony from the Early On Michigan Foundation. They’re advocating for funding for early interventions for 0-3 year-olds with developmental delays. It is vital we support these toddlers with physical and speech therapy, hearing and vision services, and specialized instruction to set up children and their families for success.

Congratulations Pat Sorenson on your retirement from Michigan League for Public Policy! And way to go out with a bang 👍Thank your your leadership, mentoring, and modeling how collaborative advocacy works on behalf of children and families ❤

The ceremonial signing of the FY2022 state budget by Governor Whitmer was this afternoon with a major part of it being the historic $1.4 billion spending plan for child care that expands low- or no-cost care to 105,000 more children across the state. Besides business , education leaders, and elected leaders, Michigan's illustrious child advocate and leading child care expert Pat Sorenson figured prominently, as well. Sorenson, Senior Policy Analyst at the Michigan League for Public Policy, was quoted in a news release sent by the Governor's office today: "The unprecedented and strategic investment in child care is a game changer that will help parents get back to work, allow child care businesses to keep their doors open, address the low wages that have made it difficult to recruit and retain child care workers, and ultimately give children a high-quality early learning experience.” It's important to mention that Sorenson announced her retirement from the League recently. This was her last state budget, explaining the often perplexing budget process to advocates and public alike. She will be sorely missed by the advocacy community, including those of us at Michigan's Children, where she once worked in earlier times. Bravo Pat! The big win for child care is a great way to close out this chapter of your professional life. Thank you for your tireless work and amazing contributions for kids and families in our state.

With sadness I'm sharing the loss of our Board Member, Michele Corey. Michele was Vice President at Michigan's Children and a tireless advocate for children and youth in our state. She generously shared her spirit and wisdom with colleagues in pursuit of improving the lives of children and families in our state. We are better off because of it. Please keep her family in your prayers.

Our hearts are broken in a million pieces as we announce the loss of our dear colleague and friend, Michele Corey, a great champion for the children and families of Michigan. For nearly a quarter century, Michele helped lead and grow Michigan’s Children with grit and integrity, and we will be forever grateful to her. She inspired others with her fighting spirit, boundless strength and compassion for the most vulnerable among us. Please join us in keeping her family in your thoughts and prayers, and read Matt Gillard’s reflections on Michele Corey here. https://mailchi.mp/michiganschildren/michigans-children-announces-the-loss-of-michele-corey.
