Earlier this week, we learned that Ax MI Tax, a group seeking to abolish all property taxes in Michigan, once again did not have enough valid voter signatures to make the statewide ballot for November. This is the second time that this group has failed to get enough signatures for the proposal to be placed on the ballot.
We are glad that this irresponsible, dangerous initiative failed to secure enough petition signatures. The Michigan Municipal League estimated that this proposal, if passed, would cut nearly $17.5 billion in funding statewide for schools, roads, recreation, and public safety. At the same time, it would provide fractional and restricted replacement funding to cities, villages, townships, and counties with no replacement revenue to schools or other authorities.
Communities are filled with spaces, activities, and core services we need and utilize daily, such as public safety, senior services, roads and water infrastructure, trash collection, education opportunities, libraries, and more. To fund these services, our communities rely on property taxes. These property taxes are vital to providing real human and economic benefits. We need to be willing to pay for the type of society we want to live in.
It’s almost as if Michiganders WANT to have quality, reliable services in their communities. Wild idea, huh?
More information on the impact of this proposal can be found here: https://mml.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/2025-AXMITAX.pdf.
While we are pleased that this effort was not successful this time, we are likely to see it rear its ugly head in the future.
For the second time, AxMITax failed to collect enough signatures to force a statewide vote on a proposal to abolish all property taxes in Michigan.
