With rain expected in the forecast over the next few days and Clinton County currently in a flood watch, SCCMUA is providing the following tips for homeowners to help prevent or reduce the chance for basement flooding.
· Make sure gutters are clear of leaves, sticks and debris.
· Make sure downspouts are connected properly.
· Test sump pumps, back-up systems and backflow preventers (if applicable) to ensure they are working properly.
· Make sure any private drains are working properly. Minimize water usage where possible.
· Remove valuable items from basements in case of flooding.
· If a sewer backup occurs in a basement, homeowners should immediately discontinue household water use and contact SCCMUA at (517) 669-8311.
For additional flood prevention tips, including projects homeowners may want to explore in the future, view this brochure from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Who else is having trouble finding toilet paper? If you are unable to find toilet paper and must resort to other types of paper for your cleaning needs, please don't place them in the toilet. All items other than #1, #2 and toilet paper should be placed in the trash cans. We are already experiencing high volumes of plugged pumps from paper products that should not be flushed down the toilet. For more information, you can read the article we wrote for Fox 47 news at:

With the toilet paper shortages that are happening due to the Coronavirus, citizens are resorting to other paper products for their cleaning needs. These can include “flushable” wipes, tissue, paper towels, etc. These items do NOT breakdown and will eventually cause issues in the sanitary sewers...

COVID-19 update: In the interest of community and employee health and wellness, SCCMUA has made the decision to temporarily close all SCCMUA buildings to the public until further notice.

During the closure, employees will be working as we are an essential service. We ask the public to call or email with questions or concerns. We will do all that we can to provide services during this difficult time.

Administrative staff will continue to monitor, plan, and communicate about this situation in the coming weeks. We will be continuing to monitor the disease and make decisions for the welfare of our employees and the public as things progress.

We want the community to know that we make these decisions with the health, safety, and welfare of the community in mind. Providing basic wastewater services is still our foremost goal, but we must act to prevent the spread of the disease.

Wastewater is used water. It is water that has been used in some way that negatively impacts the quality of water. While we normally think of wastewater as sewage, wastewater comes from many sources including homes, businesses, industries and schools. This used water comes from showers, sinks, dishwashers, laundries, car washes, clinics, food processing operations, manufacturing plants, and of course toilets just to name a few sources.

Wastewater is mostly water. Wastewater typically averages 99.94% water by weight which leaves only a small amount, 0.06% to be waste material. The small percentage of waste material is either dissolved or suspended in the water and can come from many things. The obvious waste material is human waste but it is our daily activities that contribute many of the pollutants in our wastewater including food remnants, paper products, dirt, personal care products, and cleaning supplies - just to name a few.

Concentrations of these substances are usually referred to in milligrams of pollutants per liter of water (mg/l) or parts per million (ppm). To help put this in perspective, one ppm is the same as one minute of time in 1.9 years or one inch in 16 miles. What this means in the wastewater world is that our wastewater treatment processes are designed to remove a few milligrams per liter of a pollutant similar to you looking for a needle in a haystack. However, the balance of nature depends on us to do just that and SCCMUA accomplishes this continuously 24 a hours a day, 365 days a year.
