A new Pest eAlert arrived this week. It discusses disease on three different types of plants.

1. Pecan Orchard growers should watch for the Bunchy Top disease discussed in this eAlert.

2. The eAlert also discusses a virus that was found on roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), a plant that is utilized in drinks, jams, sauces and teas and for medicinal purposes.

3. The last disease discussed is about a new aggressive strain of a fungus called Neopestalotiopsis sp. (abbreviated Neo-p) that was reported a few years ago affecting strawberry plants in southeastern US. The OSU Lab, in October, received samples from a commercial strawberry producer in Oklahoma with this problem. OSU researchers are collaborating with Clemson University researchers to fully diagnose the October samples. The eAlert provides best management practices to avoid fungus and other issues with strawberry plants.

The October 2025 plant health update includes detections of pecan bunchy top disease, To***co Ringspot virus and a new aggressive strain of fungus called Neopestalotiopsis.

It seems more and more people are interested in planting native plants in their home gardens. How do you plant them for success? We are still learning that as well. Some of our inspiration comes from seeing native plants growing wild in local pastures and along roadsides. Multiple species of native plants grow naturally crowded together, giving plants support to stay upright, allowing their blooms to entice pollinators to come and see.

This author visited the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve (north of Pawhuska) September 17 and discovered the wildflower blooms were beautiful as well as abundant. The color palette was a mix of purple, yellows, and blue with an overall background of green. Of course, some brown was mixed in as bison grazed or rested in the wide open prairie. Blue Sage had grown tall, adding a wonderful contrast to nearby sunflowers and goldenrod plants. Some of the colors are pictured in this article. This is a colorful time on the prairie where we can find inspiration for our home gardens.

In June the City of Bartlesville wrote a lovely article about the work Master Gardeners are doing at the Bartlesville City Library Gardens. Recently, they added a video with our project chairman, Neil Loftis, explaining our work with these gardens.

If you haven't been by the gardens lately, come for some ideas about which plants did well throughout the season as well as those that are looking nice as we enter the fall season. Inspiration for your home gardens may be found at the Bartlesville Public Library gardens. Most plants will be labeled.

The flower beds at Bartlesville Public Library are bursting with color thanks to the Washington County Master Gardeners, who maintain the beds as a community service project. “We plant and …

We hope everyone who visited our County Fair Booth enjoyed their visit and learned something about Out of This World plants. Maybe you learned about our space astronauts growing food plants while in outer space or about bug eating plants. Our Master Gardeners came from not only Washington County to volunteer but also from Osage County and from Kansas. The Children’s area helped children make over 1,200 crafts and around 2,000 packages of seeds were given away.

The Washington County Master Gardeners were recently recognized by the Governor of Oklahoma for our work in helping to grow over 6,000 lbs. of food each year to feed the hungry in our community! https://youtu.be/Sh7rSd34m18?si=sf0MN-9mlzY9b02R

This is the last day for the Washington County Free Fair. Inside exhibits close at 3:00 pm today but many things will still be happening outside. Hundreds of children have stopped by our Out of This World booth during the last two days and enjoyed making some unusual crafts. Crafts are still available today until we run out so come on in.
