πŸ§‘β€πŸš’ FROM THE CHIEF

Sometimes the biggest impact starts with a simple idea.

Today, on September 11th, we recognize Myles Schafer, who is celebrating his first year with the Devils Lake Fire Department.

In just one year, Myles has become a great asset to our department. He is dedicated, willing to step up, and always looking for ways to serve.

This year, Myles brought forward the idea for our first annual 9/11 Memorial Walk. He helped spearhead the event and put in the time and effort to turn his idea into a new tradition for our department. Firefighter Ethan Klindt and Firefighter Matthew Hunt stepped up alongside Myles and played an important role in helping coordinate and bring the event together.

For Myles, this wasn't just another department event. It was a way to honor the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice and ensure that we continue to Remember, Honor, and Never Forget.

One year in, and Myles is already making his mark on the Devils Lake Fire Department and helping create something that we hope will continue for generations of firefighters to come.

That's the kind of initiative and dedication that makes a difference. We're proud to have Myles Schafer as part of the DLFD. πŸš’

9/11 MEMORIAL CLIMB β€” WE CLIMB TO REMEMBER

This week, we asked Firefighter Myles Schafer and Volunteer Firefighter Ethan Klindt what it means to them to be part of the Devils Lake Fire Department 9/11 Memorial Climb.

MYLES SCHAFER

β€œI wasn’t born yet when 9/11 happened, but throughout my life I have heard the stories and learned about that day.

I climb not only for the 343 firefighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice, but for their families, friends, and everyone who continues to carry their memory.

I climb to honor their sacrifice, remember their stories, and carry their legacy forward.”

ETHAN KLINDT

β€œI was not yet born when the attacks of September 11, 2001, happened, so I do not have a personal memory of that day. However, I have heard through my family how devastating it was for our nation and how deeply it affected so many people.

After nearly four years with the Devils Lake Fire Department, I have learned what it means to serve others and be there for people during some of their hardest moments.

The 9/11 Stair Climb gives me an opportunity to honor the courage and sacrifice of the firefighters and all the first responders who answered the call that day.

Every step is a tribute to those who were lost and to the families and communities they left behind.

We climb to honor them. We climb to remember them. We climb so that we never forget.”

We asked Capt. Jeremy Beck and Volunteer Firefighter Mat Hunt what the 9/11 Memorial Climb means to them.

Capt. Jeremy Beck:
β€œTo me, walking the 9/11 Memorial Walk is a deep sense of pride to walk for those who went before us and laid it all on the line so that others could live. It is a sad day, yet also a proud one, as we see that men and women are still answering the call. All who serve in the EMS world stand on the shoulders of those who came before us and paid the ultimate price. It remains hard to fathom that there are still people willing to lay down their lives so that others may live.”

Volunteer Firefighter Mat Hunt:
β€œI was only four years old when the events of 9/11 unfolded, so I don’t have personal memories of that day or the tragedy our nation experienced. However, after joining the fire service over two years ago, I’ve come to understand what it truly means to be part of this profession and the brotherhood that stands behind it. Participating in the 9/11 event is my way of honoring the firefighters and all the lives lost that day, while paying tribute to the legacy they left behind. It’s a reminder that, although I didn’t witness that day firsthand, I have a responsibility to never forget and to carry their memory with pride and respect.”

Join us. Take the steps. Honor the sacrifice. Never Forget.
