Consul General Kishimori Celebrates President Liseann Gouin of the Japan America Society of Michigan & Southwestern Ontario (JASMSO)

On Thursday, August 27, Consul General Kishimori hosted a reception in honor of JASMSO President Liseann Gouin, in recognition of her longstanding contributions to Japan-U.S. friendship. She now assumed the position of President Emerita.

Joining the celebration were President Andrew Wylegala of the National Association of Japan-America Societies (NAJAS), and Mrs. Yoko Wylegala, who were visiting Detroit from Washington D.C. and staying at the Consul General’s residence during their visit. President Wylegala is a former classmate of Consul General Kishimori at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

President Gouin joined JASMSO in 1990 and has served as President since 1997. In this role, she has helped strengthen ties and promote mutual understanding between Japan and the U.S. through the only Japan America Society serving both Michigan and Ontario. In recognition of her many years of dedication, she was awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation in 2025.

During the reception, Consul General Kishimori, JASMSO Chair Derrick Redding, and NAJAS President Wylegala expressed their gratitude for President Gouin’s contributions. The event was also attended by JASMSO officers and board members, and individuals involved in Japanese cultural and Japan-U.S. exchange activities, all of whom joined to celebrate President Gouin’s many years of service.

8月27日（木）、岸守総領事は、ミシガン＝南西オンタリオ日米協会（JASMSO）のゴイン事務局長の退任に際し、長年の日米交流への貢献に感謝を表するレセプションを開催しました。ゴイン氏は今後、JASMSOの名誉事務局長として活動されます。当日は、岸守総領事のジョンズ・ホプキンス大学国際関係大学院（SAIS）時代の同級生であり、ワシントンD.C.からデトロイトを訪問中で総領事公邸に滞在している、全米日米協会連合会（NAJAS）ワイレガラ会長および洋子夫人も出席し、ゴイン氏の新たな門出を祝いました。

ゴイン事務局長は1990年にJASMSOに参画し、1997年からは事務局長として、日本とミシガン州、さらにカナダ・オンタリオ州を結ぶ唯一の日米協会の運営を担いながら、日米交流と相互理解の促進に尽力されてきました。その長年の功績に対し、2025年には外務大臣表彰を受賞されました。

レセプションでは、岸守総領事、レディングJASMSO会長、そしてワイレガラNAJAS会長がそれぞれゴイン事務局長への感謝と敬意を表しました。また、JASMSOの役員・理事をはじめ、日本文化活動や日米交流に携わる関係者が集い、同氏の長年にわたる功績を称えました。

Consul General Kishimori Visits TechTown Detroit

On Tuesday, August 25, Consul General Kishimori visited TechTown Detroit at the invitation of President and CEO Ned Staebler.

TechTown Detroit was established in 2000 to support tech start-ups at Wayne State University. More than 20 years later, the organization has expanded beyond the technology sector and now serves as a hub for supporting local small businesses and entrepreneurs, contributing to Detroit’s economic development.

During the visit, Consul General Kishimori, accompanied by President and CEO Staebler, toured TechTown Detroit’s coworking spaces and learned about its comprehensive support services for entrepreneurs and startups with innovative technologies and ideas, ranging from prototyping, to accessing capital, to long-term business growth.

Consul General Kishimori also experienced a space known as the “Dream Cocoon,” where entrepreneurs and business leaders at TechTown Detroit have a tradition of writing down their words of the day. As a space that symbolizes the culture of TechTown Detroit, the Dream Cocoon left a particularly strong impression on Consul General Kishimori.

8月25日（火）、岸守総領事は、テックタウン・デトロイトのステイブラー社長の招きを受け、同施設を見学訪問しました。

テックタウン・デトロイトは、ウェイン州立大学でのテクノロジー系スタートアップ支援を目的として2000年に設立されました。設立から20年以上を経た現在では、テクノロジー分野にとどまらず、地元の小規模事業者や起業家を支援するハブとして、デトロイト地域の経済開発に貢献しています。

同訪問において、岸守総領事はステイブラー社長の案内のもと、テックタウン・デトロイトが提供する共同利用型オフィススペースを視察したほか、革新的なアイデアや技術を有する起業家やスタートアップに対し、アイデアの実証から資金調達、さらには事業成長に至るまで、同施設が提供する包括的な支援について理解を深めました。

また、「ドリーム・コクーン」と呼ばれるスペースでは、同施設に集う起業家や企業関係者が日々の言葉を書き留める伝統があり、同施設の文化を象徴する空間として、岸守総領事にとって特に印象深いものとなりました。

We are delighted to support the annual Japan Festival at the Japanese Cultural Center, Tea House and Gardens of Saginaw on Sunday, September 13th!

We hope many will take this opportunity to experience Japanese tea ceremony, taiko and koto performances, Japanese calligraphy and ikebana and more!

There will be plenty of demonstrations happening, including music, dancing, martial arts, Japanese children's games, ikebana, calligraphy, and origami.

Admission is free, and demonstrations will be under tents. Tea ceremony tickets are only sold the day of the festival and cost $15 per person. Ticket sales are cash only.

Michigan Sekishu Sado Club / ミシガン石州流茶道倶楽部

Michigan Sekishu Sado Club, a nonprofit organization based in Northville, Michigan, was newly established on August 1, 2026.

The club is dedicated to promoting and fostering a deeper understanding of Japanese culture in Michigan through lessons and training in the Sekishu School of Tea Ceremony, Kimono dressing, and Calligraphy, as well as seminars, workshops, tea ceremonies, and demonstrations at community events.

Consul General Kishimori Attends Cars & Coffee Hosted by Nissan Technical Center North America

On Saturday, August 22, Consul General Kishimori attended Nissan Technical Center North America’s (NTCNA) annual “Cars & Coffee” at the invitation of Vice President Tomoyuki Hanyu of NTCNA.

Located in Farmington Hills, Michigan, NTCNA is primarily engaged in automotive research and development, product development, and vehicle testing. Cars & Coffee, held annually by NTCNA, provides participants with an opportunity to enjoy coffee and donuts while viewing a wide range of vehicles showcasing Nissan’s automotive heritage.

During the event, Consul General Kishimori, accompanied by Vice President Hanyu, toured a variety of Nissan vehicles, including a 50-year-old Fairlady Z, a well-tuned R33 Nissan Skyline owned by a passionate Nissan enthusiast, a race-ready electric Leaf, and the latest Infiniti. He also had the opportunity to experience the high-performance audio system in the latest Infiniti, developed in partnership with Panasonic and Klipsch. Additionally, he met with Regional Senior Vice President Chris Reed of Nissan Americas, gaining further insight into Nissan’s technological innovations and advancements.

8月22日（土）、岸守総領事は、日産テクニカルセンター・ノースアメリカ（NTCNA）の羽二生倫之副社長の招きを受け、同社主催の「Cars & Coffee」に出席しました。

ミシガン州ファーミントンヒルズ市に所在するNTCNAは、主に自動車の技術開発や商品開発、各種実験を行っています。同社が毎年開催する「Cars & Coffee」は、参加者がコーヒーとドーナツを楽しみながら、日産自動車が誇る多彩な車両を見学できるイベントです。

同イベントにおいて、岸守総領事は、NTCNAの羽二生副社長の案内のもと、50年前のフェアレディZをはじめ、熱心な日産ファンが所有する丹念にチューニングされたR33スカイライン、電気自動車リーフのレーシングカー、さらには最新のインフィニティまで、さなざまな車両を見学しました。さらに、パナソニックおよび米Klipsch社との協力により開発された高性能オーディオシステムを搭載した最新のインフィニティを体験したほか、会場では日産アメリカのクリス・リード上級副社長とも面会し、日産自動車の技術革新への理解を深めました。

Consul General Kishimori Welcomed Mayor Andy Schor of Lansing and Mayor Mark Behnke of Battle Creek

On Saturday, August 15, Consul General Kishimori, together with President Shin Sasaki of the Japan Business Society of Detroit (JBSD), hosted Mayor Andy Schor of Lansing, Mayor Mark Behnke of Battle Creek, and representatives of Japanese and domestic companies at the Official Residence for exchanges of views.

Lansing and Battle Creek both share deep ties with Japan through sister-city relationships and other exchanges. In addition, Yazaki North America maintains facilities in Lansing, while DENSO North America has operations in Battle Creek, making both cities important hubs for Japanese companies operating in North America.

During the gathering, representatives from both cities introduced their respective cities’ strengths, deepening mutual understanding and exchanging views on opportunities for future collaborations. Executive Vice President Masahiro Kawamoto of Yazaki North America and Senior Manager John Kerr of DENSO North America also spoke about the advantages and significance of maintaining facilities in their respective cities.

Afterward, attendees took part in a networking session, during which representatives of Japanese and domestic companies and officials from Lansing and Battle Creek exchanged ideas, strengthened their relationships, and fostered further connections for future cooperation.

8月15日（土）、岸守総領事は、デトロイト日本商工会（JBSD）の佐々木会頭とともに、ショア・ランシング市長およびベンケ・バトルクリーク市長、ならびに日系企業の代表者らを公邸に招き、意見交換会を開催しました。

ランシング市およびバトルクリーク市は、ともに姉妹都市の交流などを通じて日本と深いつながりを有しています。また、矢崎ノースアメリカがランシング市に、北米デンソーがバトルクリーク市に拠点を構えるなど、両市は日系企業の北米事業を支える重要な地域となっています。

今回の意見交換会では、両市の代表者がそれぞれの市の魅力や強みを紹介し、相互理解を深めるとともに、今後の連携の可能性について意見を交わしました。また、矢崎ノースアメリカの川本副社長および北米デンソーのジョン・カー・シニアマネージャーが、両市に拠点を置く意義や利点について紹介しました。

その後、ネットワーキングの場が設けられ、日系企業代表者らとランシング市およびバトルクリーク市の関係者が交流を深め、さらなる関係強化に向けて親睦を図りました。

Deputy Consul General Yamane Attends Annual Japanese Bon Festival at Cranbrook

On Saturday, August 8, Deputy Consul General Yamane attended MIBON 2026, a Japanese Bon Festival co-hosted by Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research and the Great Lakes Taiko Center (GLTC), at the invitation of Director Gregory Wittkopp of Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research and Ms. Eileen Ho of GLTC. The event was held at the Cranbrook Japanese Garden.

Following opening remarks by Director Wittkopp, Deputy Consul General Yamane, Chair Derrick Redding of the Japan America Society of Michigan and Southwestern Ontario, and President Shin Sasaki of the Japan Business Society of Detroit, each delivered congratulatory remarks. The event also featured a dynamic taiko drum performance by GLTC, as well as a Bon Odori dance in which attendees joined, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.

In addition to a variety of booths where visitors could experience Japanese culture, exhibits related to Japan were showcased, including a booth about Shiga Prefecture, Michigan’s sister prefecture in Japan. Japanese food was also served, providing attendees with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Japan.

8月8日（土）、山根首席領事は、クランブルックのウィトコップ所長および五大湖太鼓センター（GLTC）のホー氏の招きを受け、クランブルックおよびGLTCが共催するお盆祭り「MIBON（マイボン）2026」に参加しました。同イベントは、クランブルック日本庭園にて開催されました。

MIBONでは、ウィトコップ所長による開会挨拶に続き、山根首席領事、日米協会のレディング会長、そしてデトロイト日本商工会の佐々木会頭がそれぞれ祝辞を述べました。また、GLTCによる迫力ある太鼓演奏が披露されたほか、来場者が参加する盆踊りも行われ、会場は大いに賑わいました。

会場内には、日本文化を体験できる様々なブースに加え、ミシガン州の姉妹県である滋賀県の紹介など、日本に関する展示も行われました。さらに日本食も提供され、来場者にとって日本への理解を深める貴重な機会となりました。
