Consul General Kishimori Attends the Annual Dinner hosted by the Economic Club of Grand Rapids

On Tuesday, June 2, Consul General Kishimori attended the 37th Annual Dinner hosted by the Economic Club of Grand Rapids, at the invitation of President and CEO Rick Baker of the Grand Rapids Chamber. The annual dinner provides an opportunity for leaders from the business community, government, and other sectors in the West Michigan region to gather.

This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Economic Club of Grand Rapids, and a total of 3,400 participants, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, attended the dinner. In addition, as part of the featured program, a special conversation was held between the 42nd and 43rd Presidents of the United States, President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush.

During the event, Consul General Kishimori also had the pleasure of reconnecting with President and CEO Sandy Baruah of the Detroit Regional Chamber, as well as President and CEO Jase Bolger of the West Michigan Policy Forum. He also engaged with leaders representing major companies and organizations in the Western Michigan region.

6月2日（火）、岸守総領事は、ベーカー・グランラピッズ商工会会頭の招きを受け、グランラピッズ経済倶楽部が年次で開催する第37回夕食会に出席しました。同イベントは、西ミシガン地域の企業や政府関係者などのリーダー陣が会する機会を提供するものです。

本年はグランラピッズ経済倶楽部の創立50周年にあたり、今回の夕食会にはホイットマー・ミシガン州知事をはじめ総勢3,400名が出席しました。また、記念企画として、クリントン第42代大統領とブッシュ第43代大統領による特別対談が行われました。

さらに、岸守総領事は同イベントにおいて、デトロイト地域商工会のバルーア会頭や、西ミシガン・ポリシー・フォーラムのボルジャー会長、ラグランド・グランラピッズ市長らと再会し、歓談しました。このほか、西ミシガン地域を代表する企業や団体のリーダーらと交流する機会ともなりました。

Consul General Kishimori Attends 2026 Mackinac Policy Conference #2

From Wednesday, May 27 through Thursday, May 28, Consul General Kishimori continued to attend keynote addresses and panel discussions at the 2026 Mackinac Policy Conference.

Discussions continued under the theme, “A Quest for Common Ground.” In particular, at the beginning of the second day, President and CEO Sandy Baruah of the Detroit Regional Chamber, emphasized the importance of listening to perspectives that differ from one’s own political views. With this remark in mind, the 48th Vice President Mike Pence (Republican) and former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg (Democrat) delivered keynote addresses. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, in her keynote address the following day, also noted that bipartisan cooperation is possible across a wide range of fields. These discussions provided a reaffirmation of the importance of dialogue that transcends political views and affiliations.

In line with the conference theme, three “What’s The Fix (WTF)” sessions were also held. In the first session, speakers, including President and CEO Jeff Donofrio of the Business Leaders for Michigan, and President and CEO Randy Thelen of the Right Place, discussed economic development. They exchanged views on the challenges Michigan faces, such as lagging behind neighboring states like Ohio due to policy inconsistency stemming from being a “purple state,” as well as strategies for strengthening business growth, job creation, and economic and workforce development.

The second session featured speakers including former U.S. Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates John Rakolta Jr., focused on the economic opportunities and challenges associated with AI and data center investment in Michigan. They noted, in particular, that gaining public understanding is essential for attracting data centers and emphasized the importance of infrastructure development and enhanced communication with local communities.

In the third session, former Governor Rick Snyder and other speakers discussed education reform. Amid concerns over declining educational outcomes in Michigan, they addressed the need to increase investment in schools, reduce the burden on teachers, and promote innovation beyond traditional frameworks. Former Governor Snyder also emphasized that bipartisan dialogue is essential in achieving tangible results.

The second and third days continued to provide Consul General Kishimori with valuable insights to deepen his understanding of Michigan’s current challenges and the directions being pursued to address them.

5月27日（水）から28日（木）にかけて、岸守総領事は、マキノー政策会議2026において引き続き講演やパネルディスカッションを聴講しました。

初日に続き、会議テーマである「A Quest for Common Ground（共通点の模索）」に基づいた議論が展開されました。特にバルーア・デトロイト地域商工会会頭は、冒頭において、個人の政治思想と異なる考え方にこそ傾聴することの重要性について前置きした上で、共和党のペンス第48代副大統領および民主党のブティジェッジ元米国運輸長官が基調講演を行いました。また、ホイットマー州知事も翌日の基調講演にて、多様な分野において超党派の協力は可能であると述べたことから、党派や政治的立場を超えた対話の重要性を改めて実感する機会となりました。

さらにテーマに関連して、3つの「What’s The Fix （WTF）（意訳：解決策は何か）」セッションが開かれました。1つ目のセッションでは、ミシガン州ビジネスリーダー協会のドナフリオ会長や、ザ・ライト・プレイスのセレン総裁らが登壇し、経済発展について議論を行いました。その中で、ミシガン州がパープル州であるが故の政策の非連続性が要因で、オハイオ州などの近隣州に後れを取っている現状や、ビジネスおよび雇用の確保、さらには経済・人材開発を進める上での課題と対応策について意見が交わされました。

2つ目のセッションでは、ラコルタ元アラブ首長国連邦米国大使らが登壇し、AIインフラやデータセンター投資がミシガン州にもたらす経済的機会と課題について議論され、とりわけ、データセンター誘致に向けては、州民の理解が重要であり、インフラ整備や住民との対話の強化が求められるとの指摘がありました。

3つ目のセッションにおいては、スナイダー前州知事らが登壇し、教育改革について意見を交わしました。教育水準の低下に直面するミシガン州において、学校への投資拡充、教員負担の軽減、さらには従来の枠にとらわれない教育におけるイノベーションの推進の必要性について言及されました。加えて、スナイダー前州知事は、超党派の議論により、具体的な成果につなげていく重要性を強調しました。

2日目・3日目ともに、岸守総領事にとって、ミシガン州の現状や解決に向けた方向性について理解を一層深める時間となりました。

Consul General Kishimori Visits Autocam Medical

On Wednesday, June 3, Consul General Kishimori, together with President and CEO Rick Baker of the Grand Rapids Chamber, visited Autocam Medical, a medical device manufacturer headquartered in Grand Rapids.

Autocam Medical manufactures high-precision medical equipment and surgical instruments, contributing to innovation in the healthcare field. During the visit, under the guidance of President and CEO John Kennedy, Consul General Kishimori toured the manufacturing facilities and deepened his understanding of the company’s products and technologies.

Lastly, with the warm hospitality of CEO Baker of the Grand Rapids Chamber, the trip to Grand Rapids became highly meaningful. The Consulate General of Japan in Detroit looks forward to further strengthening its ties with stakeholders in the West Michigan region.

6月3日（水）、岸守総領事は、ベーカー・グランラピッズ商工会会頭とともに、グランラピッズに本社を置く医療機器メーカー、オートキャム・メディカルを訪問しました。

同社は、高精度の医療用機器や医療用工具の製造を手掛け、医療分野におけるイノベーションに貢献しています。今回の訪問では、ジョン・ケネディ社長らの案内のもと、製造現場を視察し、同社の製品および技術についての理解を深めました。

最後に、ベーカー会頭の温かい歓迎のもと、今回のグランラピッズ出張も有意義なものとなりました。在デトロイト日本国総領事館は。今後も引き続き西ミシガン地域の関係者との連携を一層強化していくことを楽しみにしています。

Consul General Kishimori Visits Van Andel Institute

On Wednesday, June 3, Consul General Kishimori, together with President and CEO Rick Baker of the Grand Rapids Chamber, visited the Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids. Since its establishment in 1996, the Institute has conducted a wide range of research in the field of biomedical sciences and has earned a strong international reputation.

During the visit, Consul General Kishimori had the opportunity to meet for the first time with Chairman and CEO David Van Andel of the Van Andel Institute, as well as Mrs. Carol Van Andel, Executive Director of the Dave and Carol Van Andel Family Foundation. They provided Consul General Kishimori an overview of the Institute’s current research areas and its education and training programs, and the visit also offered a valuable opportunity to gain insight into the development of the life sciences field in the Grand Rapids region.

6月3日（水）、岸守総領事は、ベーカー・グランラピッズ商工会会頭とともに、グランラピッズに拠点を置くヴァン・アンデル研究所を訪問しました。同研究所は1996年の設立以降、生物医学分野において幅広い研究を行い、国際的に高い評価を受けています。

同訪問において、岸守総領事は、ヴァン・アンデル研究所のデイビッド・ヴァン・アンデル会長兼CEOおよびヴァン・アンデル・ファミリー基金理事であるキャロル・ヴァン・アンデル夫人と初めてお会いしました。ヴァン・アンデル夫妻からは、同研究所が現在取り組んでいる研究分野や人材教育プログラムについてお話を伺うとともに、グランラピッズ地域でライフサイエンス分野が発展していることを感じる貴重な機会となりました。

Consul General Kishimori Visits Lacks Enterprises

On Tuesday, June 2, Consul General Kishimori visited Lacks Enterprises in Grand Rapids together with President and CEO Rick Baker of the Grand Rapids Chamber. The visit took place at the invitation of Mr. Kurt Lacks, Executive Director of Asian Operations and General Manager of Plastic Plate at Lacks Enterprises.

Lacks Enterprises is a Tier 1 supplier in the automotive industry with operations around the world. During the factory tour, the latest automated facilities were observed, where robots perform precision painting of automotive parts. The company also maintains a presence in Japan, and the visit provided Consul General Kishimori with a valuable opportunity to further appreciate the connections between Japan and the Western Michigan region.

6月2日（火）、岸守総領事は、ラックス・エンタープライズのラックス部長の招きを受け、ベーカー・グランラピッズ商工会会頭とともに、グランラピッズに本社を置く同社を訪問しました。

ラックス・エンタープライズは、自動車業界のティア1サプライヤーであり、国際的に事業を展開しています。今回の工場視察では、オートメーション化によりロボットが自動車部品の塗装を行う最新設備を見学しました。また、同社は日本にも拠点を有しており、岸守総領事にとって、日本と西ミシガン地域とのつながりを実感する機会となりました。

Consul General Kishimori Attends West Michigan CEO Summit 2026

On Tuesday, June 2, Consul General Kishimori attended the “West Michigan CEO Summit 2026,” an annual Summit hosted by the Grand Rapids Chamber, at the invitation of President and CEO Rick Baker of the Chamber.

At the Summit, executives from companies in West Michigan delivered presentations, and discussions were held on topics such as economy and leadership. During the event, Consul General Kishimori met with Mr. Doug DeVos, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for Amway, as well as Ms. Ashlea Souffrou, Founder and CEO of SxanPro, and Mr. Gabriel Grant, Founder and CEO of Care Granted, among other presenters and attendees.

6月2日（火）、岸守総領事は、ベーカー・グランラピッズ商工会会頭の招きを受け、同商工会が年次で開催している「ウェスト・ミシガンCEOサミット2026」に出席しました。

同サミットでは、西ミシガンに事業を展開する企業の経営陣による講演が行われたほか、経済やリーダーシップをテーマとした議論が行われました。岸守総領事は、会場にて、アムウェイのダグ・デボス取締役会共同議長にお会いしたほか、スキャン・プロのスフロウ社長や、ケア・グランテッドのグラント社長らと交流しました。

Consul General Kishimori Attends 2026 Mackinac Policy Conference #1

From Tuesday, May 26 to Friday, May 29,　Consul General Kishimori attended the Mackinac Policy Conference 2026 for the second consecutive year, at the invitation of President and CEO Sandy Baruah of the Detroit Regional Chamber. This year’s conference was held under the theme “A Quest for Common Ground,” bringing together diverse stakeholders for discussions.

On the first day, a session hosted by MichAuto led by Executive Director Glenn Stevens Jr., was held, and stakeholders discussed challenges facing Michigan’s automotive industry, including the impact of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.

Additionally, during a session moderated by President and CEO Baruah, featuring speakers including Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, stakeholders exchanged views on trust in the elections ahead of the November midterms, the impact of democracy on the economy, and businesses being nonpartisan. They then emphasized the importance of active civic participation, as well as the role of business leaders in supporting such efforts.

Former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan also spoke in another session, noting that as a “purple state”—where Republican and Democratic support is relatively balanced and election outcomes fluctuate—Michigan faces various challenges due to the political inconsistency. He further observed that Ohio’s JobsOhio has achieved a notable success in the area of economic development.

The first day of the conference provided Consul General Kishimori a valuable opportunity to deepen understanding of Michigan’s political and economic landscape through engagement with key stakeholders.

5月26日（火）から29日（金）にかけて、岸守総領事は昨年に引き続き、デトロイト地域商工会のバルーア会頭の招きを受け、同商工会が開催するマキノー政策会議2026に出席しました。本年は「A Quest for Common Ground（意訳：共通点の模索）」をテーマに掲げ、多様なステークホルダーが議論を交わしました。

初日には、スティーブンス総裁が率いるMichAuto（ミシガン州自動車産業団体）主催のセッションが行われ、中国の電気自動車の影響など、ミシガン州が直面する自動車産業の課題について議論が展開されました。

さらに、バルーア会頭が進行役を務め、ベンソン州務長官らが登壇するセッションでは、11月に中間選挙を控える中での選挙制度への信頼、民主主義が経済に与える影響、企業の政治的中立性について意見交換が行われました。市民が積極的に選挙・投票に参加することの重要性や、企業のリーダーがこうした取り組みを後押しすることの重要性が強調されました。

また、ダガン前デトロイト市長が登壇し、ミシガン州が「パープル・ステート（共和党（赤）と民主党（青）が拮抗し、選挙結果が変動する州）」であるが故に、政策が一貫性に欠けるため、州として様々な課題に直面していると言及しました。さらに経済開発の面では、オハイオ州のJobsOhioが優れた成果を上げていると評しました。

本会議初日は、主要関係者との交流や、聴講を通じて、ミシガン州の政治・経済分野の理解を深める機会となりました。
