The Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan mourns the passing of Dr. Karl D. Gregory, Ph.D., a 2002 Distinguished Warrior and one of Detroit's most influential civic and economic leaders.
Dr. Gregory dedicated his life to advancing economic opportunity, civil rights, and social justice. He helped found First Independence National Bank, serving as its chairman and interim president at its inception. Today, the bank stands as the seventh-largest Black-owned commercial bank in the United States and one of only 144 minority depository institutions in the countryโa lasting testament to his vision and leadership.
An accomplished economist, educator, and community advocate, Dr. Gregory spent decades creating pathways to opportunity and empowering communities through economic justice and civic engagement.
His legacy of leadership, service, and commitment to equity will continue to inspire future generations.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, former students, and all who were touched by his remarkable life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 20 from 2:00โ4:00 p.m. at Oakland University.
Rest in peace, Dr. Gregory. Your impact on our community will not be forgotten.
