A new $84 million investment will bring more than 150 affordable homes to Corktown while creating opportunities for longtime residents, seniors, and working families to stay rooted in the community they love.

Gun violence doesn’t just take lives. It steals futures, milestones, and moments families can never get back.

As we recognize Gun Violence Awareness Month, we wear orange to honor those we’ve lost, stand with survivors, and recommit ourselves to building safer communities across Detroit.

The call to action is simple: Become a peace ambassador in your neighborhood. Mentor a young person. Support a grieving family. Join a block club. Volunteer in your community. Help prevent conflicts before they escalate.

Every action matters. Every life matters.

Last week, at the Mackinac Policy Conference, Mayor Sheffield closed her address with an “Oprah moment.”

She asked every person in the room to reach under their seat to find a sticker.

Then came the challenge: Are you bold enough to wear it?

The instruction was simple. Put it on your shirt or your lapel, and when someone asks what it means, tell them this:

“Mayor Sheffield from Detroit wants people to know that poverty elimination is a growth strategy.”
